New English Paperback. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 211 p., color ills. An epigraphic guide to Hierapolis of Phrygia (Pamukkale). The epigraphic guide to Hierapolis of Phrygia (Pamukkale) aims to present visitors to the site and the museum with some of the most interesting Greek inscriptions that they will encounter, helping to both read and understand them. The excavations conducted by the Italian Archaeological Mission have trebled the number of documents that were known at the end of the nineteenth century, now totalling over 1000. Starting in Hellenistic times, the inscriptions from Hierapolis shed light on all aspects of urban life, and provide information on the composition of the population, on institutions and government, on municipal and provincial roles, as well as on religion, productive sectors and the organisation of gilds, Greek-type contests and amphitheatre games, the activity of public benefactors, funerary rites, the Jewish community and the expressions of Christianity. The majority of the most significant documents have been published, and work is now directed towards producing a scientific corpus of all epigraphic material. New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. In Italian. 211 p. Color ills.

Fascinating piece of depression-era Canadian monetary-reform ephemera. This 5.8" x 4.3" double-sided slip provides a backside application form to join the Free Economy League of Canada. The front side features a suggested sample of a Gesell Scientific Currency Note entitled "United Provinces of Canada Currency Note". The "One Dollar" note includes twelve boxes, representing each month in 1936. With the passing of each month this note was declared to be subject to a 1% demurrage stamp charge. Presumably the motivation behind such an instrument was to encourage spending during the depths of the Great Depression, just as negative interest rates of more recent times have similarly been aimed. Clean, bright and unmarked with negligible wear. Impress your friends with this incredible shrinking currency! Book

The present study in your hands aims to present the times of a city at least at the threshold of the modern times, before the unfortunate events of 1919-1922 through engravings, photographs and postcards. The material was collected over a long period of time due to difficulty of procurement and it was necessary to publish them instead of waiting for new material to be discovered. The glass negatives in the collection of the German Archaeological Institute (DAI) in Istanbul make up a unique set of images for Aydin. Materials presented here include those published in Bitek Topraklar Üstünde Aydin and others and they will facilitate a new access for those who would like to explore the visual history of the city. In addition, a summer home surrounded with walnut, almond, apple, pear and cherry trees and vegetable gardens. Andnobody neglected to decorate their gardens with flowers. And the streams springing on ali sides never stopped flowing. When the wheat and barley were ripe our fields were like gold gilt seas. You would never find elsewhere olive trees such as ours, full of olives so much that the branches touched the ground, round and black olives, glimmering olive trees. Olive oil was a slow but reliable source of income. But figs. Figs filled the belt of the villagers with gold! Our figs were famous not only in Aydin province but also in the East, Europe and America. Such a thin skin almost non-existing, honeyed with the sun of Anatolia." Dido Sotiriou.
