The first edition in English of Jean Pierre Edmond Jurien de la Graviere's 1812-1892 Guerres maritimes sous la republique et l'empire originally published in the Revue des Deux Mondes a surprisingly impartial account of the operations of the French Navy during the Napoleonic Wars that is in essence a life of Nelson. The author gives account of the Admiral’s youth his service in the Mediterranean and his achievements in the War of the First Coalition concluding naturally with his death at Trafalgar. . A scarce two volume set of The Knights of Malta of the navy of Philippe II. Written by the Vice-Admiral Jurien de la Graviere. The first volume chronologically considers The Caravans of the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem The second part considers the restoration of the Spanish Navy and the third part considers The Siege of Malta. With three folding maps to the end of volume one one showing The Port of Malta in 1570 the second a map of the Strait of Gibralta the northern coast of Morocco and a plan and view of Penon de Velez and the third of the Island of Malta in 1686. Collated complete. The second volume continues the part on The Siege of Malta and then the Rescue of Malta. With three folding maps being a harbour sketch of the fortification of Malta to serve for the intelligence of the siege of 1565 a map of the Islands of Malta and St Goze and a plan of the port and fortifications of Malta in 1686. Collated complete. With a bookplate for Francis Augustus Brooks to both pastedowns. Both volumes are bound in the original paper wraps. Externally they are a little worn and faded to the spine and wraps. The front wrap of volume one is slightly torn from the joint but remains attached.
