La première publication de parties des Mémoires, abondemment retravaillées par l'Abbé de l'Ecluse des Loges, son édtieur, remonte à 1638. (Quérard, IX, 290). Reliure de l'époque en plein veau, dos à 4 nerfs, pièces de titre en maroquin rouge, tomaisons en doré, entrenerfs ornés de dentelles et de fers, tranches rouges. Dans le tome 2 on passe de la page 459 à 466, 467, 462 puis 459. Imprimé à AMSTELREDAM, chez ALETINOSGRAPHE DE CLEARETIMELEE & GRAPHEXECON DE PISTARISTE , A l’enseigne des trois Vertus couronnées d’Amaranthe. La page de titre est décorée d’une vignette (14 x 15 cm) colorée en rouge et vert, illustrant la phrase précédente. Les deux premiers tomes des mémoires de Maximilien de Béthune (Duc de Sully, Ministre de « l’Economie et des Finances » d’Henri IV) imprimés dans son château en 1638/1640, en très petit nombre (moins de 500), sont maintenant rarissimes, et ont donné lieu, dès l’origine, à des contrefaçons. Les deux tomes suivants, et derniers, ont été imprimés à Paris en 1662. On connaît trois impressions de l’édition à la page de titre illustrée « aux trois vertus », avec quelques différences entre elles : la véritable originale (imprimée au château de Sully) et deux contrefaçons. Il est bien difficile de s’y retrouver. La véritable originale comporte 2 variantes : la première avec un s minuscule au mot soldat sur la page de titre, le verso de cette page de titre étant vierge (A). La deuxième avec un S majuscule au mot Soldat sur la page de titre, au verso sont imprimés deux sonnets, « Fortune de la Vertu » et « Vertu de la Fortune » (B). Dans le titre de chaque variante le mot « royales » comporte un seul « l ». Dans les contrefaçons il en comporte deux. Page 470 et suivantes du tome 1, l’originale comporte un parallèle de César avec Henri IV en caractères romains. Dans l’une des deux contrefaçons, celle dite de Rouen, imprimée en 1649, ce texte est en italique. (D’après Cioranescu, Brunet, Barbiche) Le volume en vente ici appartient à l’autre contrefaçon. Il a une page de titre version A, le mot royalles avec 2 « l » et le parallèle César-Henri IV en caractères romains.

Water-stained Gallipoli naval diary culminating in the actions in the Dardanelles in February and March 1915: 'The Captain told us were were going to take part in the forcing of the Dardenelles. a real hot time shells dropping all round us and going "plonk" against the ships side.'. Red cloth-bound manuscript book water-damaged and lacking the backstrip although the binding is intact. Writing in pencil on the front paste-down Houghton who grew up on the Lancashire coastline records 'T Houghton. Log of HMS Albion' with a preliminary page which lists dates and locations visited by the pre-dreadnought battleship between August 1914- April 1916 before continuing to the main log also written in pencil. There are a few days to each significant date written in an easily legible hand with a full typed transcript accompanying the journal. Houghton departed Devonport in August 1914 sailing first to South Africa where the ship supported the action against German south west Africa and then transferred to the Mediterranean where Houghton proceeds to hostilities on February 19th 1915: 'The hands called this morning at 5.30am and went to breakfast at 6.45 ship cleared for action. proceeded to sweep the Bay of Giata Pete from where it is intended to bombard the forts of the narrows overland action sounded off at 10am the first shot fired at 10.20am the object being a signal station which was believed to be fortified in all we fired 8 rounds of ammunition.' The bombardment of 25th February is dealt with in great detail as 'Six ships in pairs made an attack on the forts engaging 4 and 6 on the way in closing to 3000 yards then turning and engaging 1 and 3 on the way out: The "Vengeance" and "Cornwallis" were the first pair. There was plenty of shells flying about and it was not known until after the engagement that a mine thrown up too soon from the shore had saved as as it was only 50 yards away. ammunition used by us 286 rounds of 6' The bombardment of 26th February describes 'a real hot time shells dropping all round us and going "plonk" against the ships side.' The diary breaks off on March 27 1915 with a few pages that follow this torn out leaving only their stubs - possibly through censorship since it was in the following month that HMS Albion beached on a sandbank and had to be towed clear with significant injuries and damage to the vessel. Houghton certainly survived the war since a newspaper clipping laid in records his death in the 1960s. Also present a World War II 7th Armoured division desert-rat badge and some photographs of post-war bridge building on the Elbe in Germany. Good 1914 Unpublished hardcover

He learned painting from his brother Lawrence whose widow he subsequently married and from his brother-in-law Jean Belzons; he later studied with Benjamin West in London. He moved to various locations settling in Philadelphia in 1808 where he quickly became its leading portrait painter a position he held until his death. This letter to the famous historian Benson Lossing is in response to Lossing's request for the character and appearance of "the late Commodore Decatur.he demeaned himself as a perfect gentleman. His form was perfect. I painted him for the City of New York 12 of July 1814." It is one of his most famous portraits now in City Hall New York. It is a full figure portrait with Decatur leaning on the hilt of his sword and with Castle William and New York Bay in the background. Dezember 1641 in Villebon Eure-et-Loir 20 km westlich von Chartres war ein hochrangiger französischer Artillerieoffizier Großmeister der Artillerie von Frankreich Minister Staatsmann Marschall von Frankreich und Freund Heinrichs IV. Sein vollständiger Name und Titel lautete: Maximilien Ier de Béthune Duc de Sully Baron de Rosny Pair de France Prince Souverain d'Henrichemont et de Boisbelle Marquis de Nogent-le-Rotrou Comte de Muret et de Villebon Vicomte de Meaux. Sully wurde in der reformierten Kirche erzogen und zugleich mit Heinrich von Navarra unterrichtet. Er nahm mit Auszeichnung an den Feldzügen des jungen Königs von Navarra teil und kämpfte bei Coutras 1587 und bei Ivry 1590 mit. Ein strenger Calvinist stolz und schroff trat er auch seinem königlichen Freund besonders seiner Verschwendung und Ausschweifung wiederholt mit Energie entgegen; doch vereinte beide bald wieder die gemeinsame Liebe zum Vaterland. Deswegen riet er auch 1593 Heinrich zur Annahme des Katholizismus um den Bürgerkrieg zu beendigen. 1597 an die Spitze der Finanzen gestellt Conseiller aux Finances tilgte er eine Staatsschuld von 200 Millionen Livres erwarb den größten Teil der verschleuderten Domänen zurück hob eine Menge überflüssiger Ämter auf ordnete und vereinfachte das Steuerwesen baute Straßen führte die Seidenkultur und andere Erwerbszweige ein und begünstigte den Ackerbau; diesen und die Weidewirtschaft mfrz. pastourage frz. pâtourage erklärte er wiederholt als die Brüste von denen Frankreich ernährt werde «Labourage et pasturage sont les deux mamelles dont la France est alimentée». Seit 1599 auch als erster Großmeister der Artillerie von Frankreich und Oberaufseher über alle Befestigungen des Landes stellte er in kurzem die öffentliche Ruhe wieder her namentlich durch Vernichtung vieler Räuberbanden. Auf Heinrichs Zug nach Savoyen 1600 eroberte Sully die für unüberwindlich gehaltenen Festungen Montmelian und Bourg. Nach dem Frieden übernahm er unter dem Titel eines erblichen Kapitäns der Häfen Flüsse und Kanäle das Département der öffentlichen Bauten hob Zölle auf erklärte den Getreidehandel für frei legte Kanäle an und leistete in dieser Stellung viel für die Verbesserung der Kommunikationsmittel des Landes. Zugleich leitete er auch die auswärtigen Verhandlungen. 1604 wurde er zum Gouverneur von Poitou und 1606 für sein Schloss Sully an der Loire nebst den dazugehörigen Ländereien zum erblichen Herzog ernannt. Dabei erwarb er für sich selbst ein bedeutendes Vermögen. Nach der Ermordung Heinrichs IV. 14. Mai 1610 wurde er seiner Stellung am Hof entbunden und von diesem auf sein Schloss verwiesen; doch bediente sich auch Ludwig XIII. öfters seines Rats und ernannte ihn 1634 zum Marschall von Frankreich. Sein gleichnamiger Sohn übernahm das Amt des Großmeister der Artillerie von Frankreich starb aber bereits 1634 mit 46 Jahren. Maximilien de Béthune Herzog von Sully starb am 21. Dezember 1641 im Alter von 81 Jahren. Des frottements aux reliures, mors fragilisés dont deux partiellement fendus, le deuxième plat du tome II présente un manque de cuir. Le corps des ouvrages est en bon état, on signale juste une déchirure à la page de titre sans manque, des annotations d'appartenance en pages de gardes blanches avec mentions pour restitution en cas de perte au tome IV, une trace d'humidité marginale au tome VIII, le deuxième plat du tome I qui est un peu déformé, des coins un peu émoussés. Malgré les défauts signalés, dont notre prix tient compte, reste un ensemble très correct pour ces mémoires recherchées et peu courantes complètes.

Illustrated portrait frontispiece in each volume. Text blocks are mostly in very good condition clean and bright with sunning to endpapers and very occasional and minimal foxing. Volume four has light water damage along bottom edge to roughly an inch in height not affecting text. Minimal wear to extremities barely through calf on less than half of the corners. 5 1/4 x 8 1/4 inches. Printed for Stirling and Slade, and Archibald Constable, et al. hardcover
