Gold impressing on spines. Lower spine labels nearly completely chipped away. Some slight chipping at spine ends. Corners bumped. Hinges cracking. Labels for "Minto" on front pastedowns. Slight thumbing soiling foxing throughout. Volume I: Page 53 has chipped bottom corner. Small worm hole in rear board. <br/><br/>Maximilien de Bèthune duc de Sully 1560 - 1641 was a soldier minister Huguenot and superintendent of finances to Henry IV of France until that king was assassinated. His memoirs written in the second person are valuable as historical documents and as an autobiography - despite the fact that they contain many fictions such as a mission undertaken by Sully to Queen Elizabeth I in 1601. hardcover

His principal work was concerned with financial administration. He reconstructed an administration which had been dislocated by 30 yrs of civil war. He established a rigorous control. 200816SMDeux tomes en un seul volume in folio (25 x 38 cm), 4ff +535 pages + 4ff + 459 pages. La pagination est hasardeuse. Par exemple dans le tome 1 on passe de la page 193 à la page 294. Dans le tome 2 on passe de la page 459 à 466, 467, 462 puis 459. Imprimé à AMSTELREDAM, chez ALETINOSGRAPHE DE CLEARETIMELEE & GRAPHEXECON DE PISTARISTE , A l’enseigne des trois Vertus couronnées d’Amaranthe. La page de titre est décorée d’une vignette (14 x 15 cm) colorée en rouge et vert, illustrant la phrase précédente. Les deux premiers tomes des mémoires de Maximilien de Béthune (Duc de Sully, Ministre de « l’Economie et des Finances » d’Henri IV) imprimés dans son château en 1638/1640, en très petit nombre (moins de 500), sont maintenant rarissimes, et ont donné lieu, dès l’origine, à des contrefaçons. Les deux tomes suivants, et derniers, ont été imprimés à Paris en 1662. On connaît trois impressions de l’édition à la page de titre illustrée « aux trois vertus », avec quelques différences entre elles : la véritable originale (imprimée au château de Sully) et deux contrefaçons. Il est bien difficile de s’y retrouver. La véritable originale comporte 2 variantes : la première avec un s minuscule au mot soldat sur la page de titre, le verso de cette page de titre étant vierge (A). La deuxième avec un S majuscule au mot Soldat sur la page de titre, au verso sont imprimés deux sonnets, « Fortune de la Vertu » et « Vertu de la Fortune » (B). Dans le titre de chaque variante le mot « royales » comporte un seul « l ». Dans les contrefaçons il en comporte deux. Page 470 et suivantes du tome 1, l’originale comporte un parallèle de César avec Henri IV en caractères romains. Dans l’une des deux contrefaçons, celle dite de Rouen, imprimée en 1649, ce texte est en italique. (D’après Cioranescu, Brunet, Barbiche) Le volume en vente ici appartient à l’autre contrefaçon. Il a une page de titre version A, le mot royalles avec 2 « l » et le parallèle César-Henri IV en caractères romains.
