In fine condition. ~ The famous oval bust portrait of Honoré Gabriel Riqueti, Comte de Mirabeau (1749-1791). Engraved by Frantz Gabriel Fiesinger (1723-1807), after a painting by Jean-Urbain Guérin (1760-1836). Published by Emery Walker as frontispiece.

Elaborate illustrated head- and tail-pieces and initials. Chronology. Hardcover, uniformly bound in contemporary polished mottled half-calf and matching marbled boards, spines with matching morocco labels lettered in gilt between double decorative gilt rules, volume number in gilt between gilt rules, decorative head and foot gilt. All edges speckled; bookplate and contemporary shelf label; foxed, spotted. Handsome set in a very good condition. ~ In the mid 19th century the national campaign for literacy and historical knowledge in France mandated an increasing reliance on illustrated texts. Théodose Burette's "Histoire de France" is a fine example for enabling the past to "speak for itself" through the union of the text with more than 500 illustrations by Jules David, "that other historian, the illustrator". Burettes and David's groundbreaking work would influence historical narration and illustration for the next thirty years, to the "histoires populaires" of Henri Martin and Victor Duruy in the Second Empire. Scarce edition, published in Brussels simultaneously with the Paris edition.
