Leaving Regency England to live in Portugal had been bad enough but marrying Pedro de Sequeira seemed a fate far more odious than spinsterhood. Thus when dashing Luis de Valente made Claire his most extraordiary proposalshe unquestioningly said yes. Luis wanted to escape the hordes of marriageable young ladies thrust upon him. Claire was fleeing marrige as well. They only had to pretend to become engaged and both would be sae especially if Claire came to live at the de Valente acestral home the Azure Castle. It was this dreamlike setting that Claire discovered what a grave mistake she had made. She had foolishly fallen in love with this haughty aristocrat - now had to capture the heart ofa a man who had eluded the proudest beauties of Europe and who wasso temptingly near yet so maddeningly far away. The objective of this investigation was to gain insight into the mechanism of rare earth substitution as related to laser characteristics in the calcium fluorapatite crystal structure. Trivalent lanthanide elements particularly neodymium have found wide application as active ions in solid-state lasers. Over thirty different crystalline compounds and glasses have received serious attention as laser hosts for Nd. In 1968 the first laser results for neodymium in fluorapatite called FAP for brevity were published. Due to the high gain and low threshold
properties reported FAP became one of the most promising hosts for neodymium lasers. It is shown in this dissertation that introducing neodymium as a fluoride into FAP cannot result in laser crystals as efficient as those incorporating neodymium sesquioxide. The
reason is associated with differing criteria for site selection between the two compounds. Also includes program for the Oral Examination of Robert Danton Eaglet Friday June 26 1970 at the Seaver Science Center. The Dissertation Committee was Professor De Shazer Professor Porto and Professor Steier. Robert Danton Eaglet hardcover
