Paper first published in the Proceedings of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences Vol. 80 no. 4 March 1954 and reissued here as "Contributions to the Analysis and Synthesis of Knowledge" no. 4. Study by the Polish Jewish psychoanalyst following her arrival in Berkeley after escaping from Poland and later Austria during the Nazi regime. In 1950 she contributed to Theodor Adorno's groundbreaking work "The Authoritarian Personality" but following the suicide of her husband in 1955 she suffered greatly from depression and also committed suicide in 1958.
