br. Il mio approccio alla classe è fermamente innestato nella tradizione marxista, mentre nessuno di questi autori adotta un tale approccio e alcuni sono apertamente ostili al marxismo... Mentre ci possono essere circostanze di dibattito intellettuale dove sbaragliare l'oppositore è appropriato, in questi saggi il mio obiettivo è comprendere cosa sia la cosa più utile ed interessante, piuttosto che prioritariamente indicare cosa sia sbagliato nel lavoro di un particolare autore. Si potrebbe definire un'analisi centrata sulle virtù invece che sui difetti... La tradizione marxista è un prezioso e interessante corpus di idee perché individua con successo i reali meccanismi che riguardano un ampio raggio di problemi importanti, ma non costituisce un compiuto paradigma capace di spiegare esaustivamente tutto il sociale o sussumere tutti i meccanismi sociali sotto una cornice unitaria. Inoltre esso non ha un monopolio nella capacità di identificare i meccanismi reali, pertanto in pratica la ricerca sociologica fatta dai marxisti dovrebbe combinare meccanismi propriamente marxisti con qualunque altro processo causale sembri pertinente al fine in questione. Ciò che potrebbe essere chiamato "realismo pragmatista" ha sostituito la Grande Battaglia fra Paradigmi... Io continuo a ritenere che l'analisi di classe marxista sia superiore alle altre tradizioni rispetto ad uno spettro di questioni che ritengo di fondamentale importanza, specialmente quelle concernenti la natura del capitalismo, i suoi danni e contraddizioni, e le possibilità di una sua trasformazione. Ma anche rispetto a queste tematiche centrali del marxismo, le altre tradizioni analitiche hanno qualcosa da offrire.
