A classic work finely illustrated.

Rothschild divided the extinct species into two categories: 'those known externally as well as internally and those of which we know bones and egg-shells only.' The available information on the former varies from very full literature on some to partial and unreliable information provided by 'old writers' whose main interest was limited to 'the culinary properties of the various birds.' Rothschild goes on to identify various causes for the destruction of the species: the need for food sport the introduction of animals of prey and new diseases and the destruction of their habitat. Zimmer notes that the plates are excellent and are after many of the greatest ornithological artists working in Great Britain at the time.
Anker 430; Nissen IVB 795; Errol Fuller Extinct Birds 2001 p.391; Wood p.543; Zimmer p.533. "Whatever place its author may ultimately occupy in future histories of England, one thing is certain, that in the history of the Jewish people the name of Balfour will enjoy unchallenged immortality, evoking comparison with that of Cyrus, for the issue of the Balfour Declaration marked the opening of a new epoch in the annals of Jewry which will be recognised as such even in the remotest centuries to come. In this little book have been gathered together all the utterances of Lord Balfour on the interpretation and implications of his Declaration, on its political aspects and its practical realisation, made during the last ten years." - Preface. Rothschild was obsessed with the cassowary a giant flightless bird with a colorful neck native to Papua New Guinea and the surrounding islands. He invested huge amounts of money in bringing the species over to England both dead and alive in order to study their habits plumage and behavior. In this monograph Rothschild describes in minute detail all species and subspecies local names measurements distribution bibliography and all other pertinent information such as the anatomical and taxonomic information. Casey Wood refers to it as “a beautifully illustrated treatise†and Anker goes a step further by calling it “an especially profusely illustrated treatise.†The second section deals withâ€the relations of the Casuariidae to the remaining ‘Struthious’ forms and the position of these with regard to the ‘Carinatae’†introduction. Pycraft credits Rothschild for having furnished the bulk of the material for this monograph.

Rothschild 1868-1937 2nd Baron Rothschild member of one of the world’s wealthiest familes was a British zoologist who became a great collector and founded the Rothschild Natural History Museum in London. 483 pages. "In this volume the author endeavors to give an accurate history of the present National Bank System of currency, including an account of the first United States Bank, - both of which were borrowed from Great Britain by those statesmen who, like the father of Sir Robert Peel, believed that a national debt was the source of prosperity. It is believed that the facts adduced in the following pages will be productive of some good, in pointing out the immense evils lurking in that system of banking, - a system which has produced panics at will, and which is the active abettor of the stock gamblers, railroad wreckers, and those industrial tyrants of modern times, the enormously overcapitalized and oppressive trusts. It is sought to point out the great dangers of delegating purely government powers to these greedy monopolists, by which they are enabled to organize a money trust, far more tyrranical than all the other combinations now in existence; and by which they absolutely defy the authority that endowed them with corporate life." - from Introduction. Binding sound. Unmarked. Moderately worn and soiled externally. Only defects are insect damage along exterior of each hinge. Detailed photos available upon request. An ultra-rare first edition copy of this classic and vitally important work. Book

375 pages. Index. "When I began my study I looked upon Woodrow Wilson as the villain of the ensuing drama. As I proceeded to delve into the debris of reminiscences and unwritten history, he gradually assumed some aspects of a martyr and a saint. There was a time when there was no one in the world whom I distrusted more than Edward Mandell House. Today he seems to me a genuine philosopher and a gifted statesman. Even if his good intentions, like Wilson's, have helped to pave mankind's way to hell, they gave us a glimpse of the Promised Land where peace abides and a new sanction governs the fate of nations." - xiv. It is commonly believed that Colonel House was in fact a Rothschild agent, assigned the task of seeing the Federal Reserve Act brought into law, thus privatizing the issuance of American money (again). If so, this book is of major importance to every American. Gift greetings, dated 1932, upon front free endpaper else unmarked. Binding intact. Above-average wear and soiling to tan cloth-covered boards. Narrow openings in cloth between backstrip and back board. Book

Nathan Mayer Rothschild was an English-German banker businessman and financier a symbol of a new type of social elite - the Lord of Finance. Founder of the English branch of the prominent Rothschild family Rothschild gained his power by dealing in gold bullion subsidizing British allies and issuing bonds for government loans a mainstay of his bank's business. He gained a position of such power in the City of London that by 1825–1826 he was able to supply enough coin to the Bank of England to enable it to avert a liquidity crisis. The bond system was a revolutionary development in financing due to the high liquidity of assets that the land-based system lacked. Imperial Commission of the Sinking Fund unknown
