Hubbard (1856-1915), was a prolific writer and a tireless entrepreneur who is most famous today as the founder and guiding lig h t of the Roycroft printing and craft shops. These were based on the Hammersmith arts and crafts complex of William Morris, but with many American and Hubbard-ian twists and turns. Until his death on t he S.S. Lusitania, he was one of the most dynamic and famous men in the world. On his first trip abroad his letters home were mostly travelogue, and they became the basis for his first magazine eff ort . He sold Putnam's the idea of putting out a brief 'Little Journey' biographical sketch on a monthly basis. Later, when he established his own print shop, he took over the whole project. He also p rint ed and published two national opinion magazines, the 'Fra' and the 'Philistine'. He was also responsible for the famed 'A Message to Garcia'. Sehr gutes Ex. - Mit farb. illustr. Einband. … (Verlagstext) / INHALT : Vorwort - Essays - Bernhard Palme - Byzantinisches und früharabisches - Ägypten - Ines Bogensperger und - Regina Hofmann-de Keijzer - Gail Rothschild und das Rot der Schildlaus - Farbe und Färben in der Antike - Kathrin Mälck - Von der Reparatur bis zur Restaurierung - Zur Erhaltung der spätantiken Textilfunde - Cäcilia Fluck - Entdeckung und künstlerische Rezeption - spätantiker Textilien aus Ägypten - Peter Bichler - Faszination Textil - Vom Sehen und Sammeln - Thelma K. br.
Milano, A. Mondadori, (1938), in-16, tela editoriale, titolo in oro, pp. XVI, 436.
354 pages. pages. Index. Black and white plates. Multi-panel fold-out family tree at back. "Light is thrown from a fresh angle on Disraeli and his erratic wife, as well as on Thackeray, all three friends of the family. There are glimpses of Louis Napoleon and the disturbances of 1848 and of 1870, of the Austrian Court in 1873, and of three generations of our own royal family. In their letters and conversations we find characteristic traits of Mr. Gladstone, Lord Rosebery, and their Liberal supporters, and of Burne-Jones and Meredith, and other artists and writers.... The Rothschild family in its earlier days appeals to the imagination by its financial power, which brought it into contact with those who ruled the destinies of Europe and by its munificence; while its Judaism and the peculiar features of its solidarity make the family history interesting and, in some ways, unique." - from Preface. Considerable wear and staining to blue cloth exterior. Gift greetings inside front board. Prior owner's name atop front free endpaper. Binding tender but intact. br.
