Sleeve edge-worn with old price penned to one side. Plays cleanly. Also includes 4pp. mechanically-reproduced script 8.5" x 11" approx. printed recto only stapled at top left corner. Folded through center with some light edge-wear and creasing. Very good overall.

Originally developed as a TV movie CHAMBER OF HORRORS was spiced up for the big screen with additional gore and violence and a marketing campaign focusing on two technical "innovations" — the "Fear Flasher" and the "Horror Horn" both designed to warn the audience of impending violence. Billed as "The year's most startling entertainment innovation!" it nevertheless appears this gimmick never enjoyed widespread or even another use but is an interesting example of the methods studios used to promote their films particularly "B" movies in the post-studio era. The LP includes four versions of the film's radio spots all melodramatically touting the movie's supposed innovations. Unusual and ephemeral. Warner Brothers unknown books

192019173New York: Standard Slide Corp. ca. 1920. Collection of seven 7 lantern slides hand-colored in transparent dyes on glass. In original tape casings. Well preserved each about near fine.

An uncommonly well-preserved and beautiful collection of silent-era movie-house marketing slides ca. 1920. Intended for projection as movie-goers made their way to seats and during intermissions reel changes film repairs and the like the slides are colorfully executed in a striking Deco style. Messages vary from announcements of coming attractions to pleas for quiet children. Slide titles include: "Complete Change of Program Tomorrow" "The Management of This Theatre Will be Glad to Hear from Anyone Who Has a Just Criticism." etc. While slides promoting upcoming attractions produced by movie studios are relatively common in-house slides such as these are decidely more ephemeral. A scarce survival and an attractive relic of the silent-film era and early American cinema. Standard Slide Corp. unknown books
194016761Hollywood / New York: Columbia Pictures / Polygraphic Company of America ca. 1940. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Folio. 18.5” x 12.25” approx. Metallic gold paper covered boards with titles printed in red and blue. Rubbing to boards. Some light wear at spine ends. Interior bright and sharp. In original brown card mailer worn at edges with moderate damp-staining not effecting book at one end. 50pp. Very good overall.

Lavish promotional book of full-bleed and -color lithographed illustrations advertising upcoming programs for Columbia Pictures' 1940-1941 season. Likely distributed to theater owners and clearly produced well in advance of actual production the book contains a disclaimer stating that properties may not be produced precisely as advertised. And indeed most of the films advertised did not make it into theaters or did so with different stars or under different titles. Of the films included 11 appear to be completely unrealized with most of the remaining either produced under different titles with different principals or both. Most of the pictures rely heavily on Columbia's roster of contract players: Cary Grant Loretta Young Melvyn Douglas Jean Arthur etc. Star directors like Charles Vidor also feature prominently. While many of the pictures seem well on their way to production — with directors writers and stars attached — some seem to be little more than ideas such as “Canal Zone” or “I Joined the Bund” with generic titles evoking timely topics. In addition a handful of CBS radio plays are advertised as well including Ellery Queen and Blondie. An uncommon look into film marketing and production at the height of the studio era. Only two holdings in OCLC; especially rare with original mailer. [Columbia Pictures] / (Polygraphic Company of America) hardcover books
198019801ca. 1980s. Five airbrushed paintings on quarter-inch plywood panels each approximately 28" x 20" or slightly larger. One signed to verso. Most likely originally in two contiguous panels in current form when acquired. Each is weathered and often heavily worn about the edges. Overall about good.

A striking suite of advertising signage from an airbrush t-shirt artist named Dick Green signed "Dick Green" and "Birdie" on verso of one. Region of origin is unknown though likely Rust Belt given area of acquisition. Mounted metal hinges at outer margins and warnings against tailgating lettered above the illustrations strongly suggest these most likely doubled as rear doors for a trailer. Airbrush t-shirt artists were and continue to be staples of Midwestern and Southern fairs swap meets flea markets car and truck rallies and the like. The panels are undated though style suggests 1980s possibly earlier. Subjects include: a muscle car a hotrod a monster truck three incarnations of the name "Jim" and what we can only describe as a giant parrot piloting a small airplane. A scarce group of vernacular advertising from an obviously skilled practitioner of this quintessential form of lowbrow art. unknown books

Concerned with promotion and publicity from its early years McCormick's was a provider of biscuits to the Dionne Quintuplets a recipient of their youthful endorsements and a donor of sizable royalties to their trust fund. In an included four-page spread from September 1967's THE MERCHANDISER the company proudly notes this connection while advertising its own advertising prowess through the decades: "The brochures are attractive and mouth-watering."

Included brochures verify this claim; pictured products range from familiar vintage confections like cherry cordials and Walnut Shorties "WALNUTS make the difference"! to discontinued exotica like Ceylon Mallows Pie Face &" Fat Emma" candy bars a Minneapolis invention of the 1920s all but disappeared by the 1970s now extinct; Golden Humbugs Canada Lozenges and Sea Kings/Roi de la Mer. McCormick also produced accessories edible and otherwise through the Imperial Cone Company represented here by an illustrated leaflet with photos and dimensions of Torch Cones Buddy Waffles Sweetheart Straws etc.

The small selection of dated items range from 1953 to 1982 though most materials are undated; the majority of the archive consists of product photographs in vibrant glowing color for use in promotional materials catalogs and store displays. Most of these prints date from the 1960s through the early 1970s with several showcasing 1967 Canadian Centennial packaging. Shut down in the 2000s the abandoned McCormick factory has become a tantalizing attraction to urban explorers.

Though a Canadian company there is something of the quintessentially mythic innocent post-war American childhood captured in these indelible primary-color images. Simultaneously a engaging record of this important culinary company and an undeniably nostalgic document. [McCormick's Limited] unknown books
