1937218484東京. Tokyo.: 名誉蔵. Meiyokura. Showa 12 1937-1939. Sixteen delightful small porcelain spinning tops measuring 2.0 x 1.7cm in size each accompanied by ten handsome colour printed product labels heightened in gilt with soft purple cord ties 8.3 x 6cm. An intriguing collection of sake advertising ephemera in very good condition. These sake promotional giveaways and accompanying die-cut cards in the shape of the Order of the Golden Kite are advertisements associated with Meiyo-gura a sake brand sold in Nihonbashi Tokyo.

The advertisement describes a koma spinning top attached beneath the bottle top which could also serve as a small entertainment item. Each koma was hexagonal and could be used as a dice or a novelty accessory for drinking games. The value printed on the koma could be redeemed if customers presented both the koma and the accompanying medal card.

These redemption promotions were available between 1937 and 1939. However in June 1941 the rationing of sake was introduced firmly ending such promotional schemes. The product labels which were finely printed as these are also informed customers about how to claim these discounts further enhancing the appeal of the product during its promotional period.

A curious example of the everyday cultural impacts of Japanese militarism - the Order of the Golden Kite was an award exclusively for military service and was not available to the civilian public. Over the course of the Second Sino-Japanese and Pacific Wars the order would be awarded over 140000 times dwarfing all previous conflicts and reflecting the frenetic nature of Japan's total mobilisation. . 名誉蔵. 191076053Chicago: De Laurence Scott & Co. 1910. First edition of this ridiculous pirated edition. Octavo. 250 pp. plus frontispiece photographic illustration of Benares and 4 full page plates. Publisher's maroon cloth with an abundance of gilt lettering to the spine and front. Bookseller's receipt laid into font of book which has caused some offsetting to the blanks. An excellent copy. This is quite simply a garishly re-titled edition of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's "The Mystery of Cloomber" first published in 1888. Conan Doyle's fascination with Spiritualism is very well known. He once wrote in the Evening Standard in 1920- ""There are only two vital propositions in Spiritualism. These are that personality survives death without a change; the other that under proper physical conditions communication is still possible." But what is remarkable here is de Laurence's hijacking of the title with almost no credit given to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. On the title page all that is given is the miserly attribution to "A.C.D." On the front cover in bright and bold gilt we read "Editorship of Dr. L W. deLaurence" It is not clear how it is possible but deLaurence even copyrighted it 1910. His publishing company De Laurence Scott & Co. and spiritual supply mail order house was located in Chicago Illinois. De Laurence was a pioneer in the business of supplying magical and occult goods by mail order and his distribution of public domain books. His books were invariably printed on cheap paper and all bore signs of the occult. De Laurence Scott & Co had a reputation for pirating the books of other occultists. De Laurence also wrote his own works including The Master Key a personal development book. In addition he is believed to have co-written some books with his fellow Chicago resident the prolific New Thought and yoga author William Walker Atkinson. De Laurence, Scott & Co. hardcover

192019173New York: Standard Slide Corp. ca. 1920. Collection of seven 7 lantern slides hand-colored in transparent dyes on glass. In original tape casings. Well preserved each about near fine.

An uncommonly well-preserved and beautiful collection of silent-era movie-house marketing slides ca. 1920. Intended for projection as movie-goers made their way to seats and during intermissions reel changes film repairs and the like the slides are colorfully executed in a striking Deco style. Messages vary from announcements of coming attractions to pleas for quiet children. Slide titles include: "Complete Change of Program Tomorrow" "The Management of This Theatre Will be Glad to Hear from Anyone Who Has a Just Criticism." etc. While slides promoting upcoming attractions produced by movie studios are relatively common in-house slides such as these are decidely more ephemeral. A scarce survival and an attractive relic of the silent-film era and early American cinema. Standard Slide Corp. unknown books
1964List3328Brooklyn New York 1964. Twenty-eight page scrapbook measuring 11 x 14 inches. Containing forty-one photographs measuring 5 x 7 inches and smaller and fifty-eight pieces of ephemera forty-three of which are filled-in entry slips from a contest. Cover with wear and large stain contents generally excellent; overall very good to excellent. The Carpetbaggers is a 1964 film directed by Edward Dmytryk based on the controversial 1961 novel of the same name which was banned in several US cities for its depictions of sexuality and violence.1 Offered here is a scrapbook documenting an unconventional marketing campaign for the film’s New York run at Loew’s Metropolitan Theatre in Downtown Brooklyn. The theater’s conventional marketing tactics included contests flyering spraypainting sidewalks and distributing promotional cards for stores. Less conventional ones included employees reading a gigantic “oversized book†on the subway the “Subway ballyhoo†erecting eight large fake telephone booths and carrying a suitcase reading “I’M ON MY WAY TO SEE THE CARPETBAGGERS AT LOEW’S METROPOLITAN†the “Walking ballyhooâ€. The photograph of this last tactic shows a man who at least resembles Adlai Stevenson looking at the suitcase as he walks by; the caption reads: “Let’s start off with a question. . . . IS THERE ANY REASON WHY ADLAI STEVENSON OUR AMBASSADOR TO THE U N. . . . . SHOULD NOT BE ADVISED THAT THE ‘CARPETBAGGERS’ WERE AT THE LOEW’S METROPOLITAN THEATRE.†All thirty-seven of the various tactics are listed in a caption at the end of the scrapbook.

The scrapbook also acts as a document of Downtown Brooklyn in 1964 especially its then-bustling shopping area on Fulton Street. Stores include Woolworth’s E.J. Korvette’s Bond’s Bunnie Towne and more. Though mainly department store interiors it also shows in several shots the subway entrances and cars street scenes smaller shops and restaurants and the exterior and lobby of Loew’s Metropolitan. Opened in 1918 the theatre closed in 1996 and re-opened in 2002 as a church.
The Carpetbaggers received mixed reviews and its share of controversy particularly for a nude scene which had to be cut from the US release. In response to the controversy actress Carroll Baker who appears in the nude scene told the New York Times that her “children have seen things on the benches of Central Park that have never been shown in movies.â€2

Of interest to historians of film and film marketing and of the Downtown Brooklyn neighborhood.

1 Dawn B. 194016761Hollywood / New York: Columbia Pictures / Polygraphic Company of America ca. 1940. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Folio. 18.5” x 12.25” approx. Metallic gold paper covered boards with titles printed in red and blue. Rubbing to boards. Some light wear at spine ends. Interior bright and sharp. In original brown card mailer worn at edges with moderate damp-staining not effecting book at one end. 50pp. Very good overall.

Lavish promotional book of full-bleed and -color lithographed illustrations advertising upcoming programs for Columbia Pictures' 1940-1941 season. Likely distributed to theater owners and clearly produced well in advance of actual production the book contains a disclaimer stating that properties may not be produced precisely as advertised. And indeed most of the films advertised did not make it into theaters or did so with different stars or under different titles. Of the films included 11 appear to be completely unrealized with most of the remaining either produced under different titles with different principals or both. Most of the pictures rely heavily on Columbia's roster of contract players: Cary Grant Loretta Young Melvyn Douglas Jean Arthur etc. Star directors like Charles Vidor also feature prominently. While many of the pictures seem well on their way to production — with directors writers and stars attached — some seem to be little more than ideas such as “Canal Zone” or “I Joined the Bund” with generic titles evoking timely topics. In addition a handful of CBS radio plays are advertised as well including Ellery Queen and Blondie. An uncommon look into film marketing and production at the height of the studio era. Only two holdings in OCLC; especially rare with original mailer. [Columbia Pictures] / (Polygraphic Company of America) hardcover books

198019801ca. 1980s. Five airbrushed paintings on quarter-inch plywood panels each approximately 28" x 20" or slightly larger. One signed to verso. Most likely originally in two contiguous panels in current form when acquired. Each is weathered and often heavily worn about the edges. Overall about good.

A striking suite of advertising signage from an airbrush t-shirt artist named Dick Green signed "Dick Green" and "Birdie" on verso of one. Region of origin is unknown though likely Rust Belt given area of acquisition. Mounted metal hinges at outer margins and warnings against tailgating lettered above the illustrations strongly suggest these most likely doubled as rear doors for a trailer. Airbrush t-shirt artists were and continue to be staples of Midwestern and Southern fairs swap meets flea markets car and truck rallies and the like. The panels are undated though style suggests 1980s possibly earlier. Subjects include: a muscle car a hotrod a monster truck three incarnations of the name "Jim" and what we can only describe as a giant parrot piloting a small airplane. A scarce group of vernacular advertising from an obviously skilled practitioner of this quintessential form of lowbrow art. unknown books

195323230London Ontario: McCormick's Limited ca. 1953-1982. Very good . Collection of 175 C prints in various sizes: 1 One hundred and twenty-seven 3.5'' x 5'' photographs. Of these sixteen are set into posterboard displays in groups of four with the remaining 111 photos loose. The majority have only minor edgewear with a small number of loose photos showing small tears or tape to corners. 2 Twenty-four 8.5'' x 11'' prints. Moderate to heavy scuffing at corners; some foxing. 3 Thirteen 3.25 x 7/25 prints. 4 Eleven 5'' x 7'' prints. Also included: Assorted branded ephemera approximately 40 items including: company correspondence safety & sanitation posters brochures stickers three leaflets placards calendars packaging mailing envelopes inter-office memo pad petty cash slips billing and order forms. Very good plus overall with individual exceptions as noted above.

Vibrant archive of marketing presentation mailing advertising and sales materials for a wide assortment of primarily candy and other confections from McCormick's Limited and affiliated bakeries - consisting mainly of a colorful collection of 175 original photographs of various McCormick products.

The company was established in the 19th century as the McCormick Biscuit and Candy Company and by the years represented in this collection was owned by George Weston Limited producer of Wonder Bread for the Canadian market. Concerned with promotion and publicity from its early years McCormick's was a provider of biscuits to the Dionne Quintuplets a recipient of their youthful endorsements and a donor of sizable royalties to their trust fund. In an included four-page spread from September 1967's THE MERCHANDISER the company proudly notes this connection while advertising its own advertising prowess through the decades: "The brochures are attractive and mouth-watering."

Included brochures verify this claim; pictured products range from familiar vintage confections like cherry cordials and Walnut Shorties "WALNUTS make the difference"! to discontinued exotica like Ceylon Mallows Pie Face &" Fat Emma" candy bars a Minneapolis invention of the 1920s all but disappeared by the 1970s now extinct; Golden Humbugs Canada Lozenges and Sea Kings/Roi de la Mer. McCormick also produced accessories edible and otherwise through the Imperial Cone Company represented here by an illustrated leaflet with photos and dimensions of Torch Cones Buddy Waffles Sweetheart Straws etc.

The small selection of dated items range from 1953 to 1982 though most materials are undated; the majority of the archive consists of product photographs in vibrant glowing color for use in promotional materials catalogs and store displays. Most of these prints date from the 1960s through the early 1970s with several showcasing 1967 Canadian Centennial packaging. Shut down in the 2000s the abandoned McCormick factory has become a tantalizing attraction to urban explorers.

Though a Canadian company there is something of the quintessentially mythic innocent post-war American childhood captured in these indelible primary-color images. Simultaneously a engaging record of this important culinary company and an undeniably nostalgic document. [McCormick's Limited] unknown books
