Bavaria, under Maximilian I (1598-1651), was a country of around 1 million inhabitants, with agriculture and salt production (a ducal monopoly) being the dominant sectors of the economy. It became a key player in the events leading up to the Thirty Years War. In 1608, Bavaria occupied and annexed the hitherto free Imperial and Lutheran city of Donauworth. The action caused the Protestant princes and cities to found the Protestant Union. Bavaria then concluded an alliance with the Austrian and Hungarian Estates. In 1609 Bavaria became the leading force in the newly founded (Catholic) Holy League, an alliance formed against the Protestant Union. Consolidating his governance, Duke Maximilian, in 1616 introduced a new Bavarian Landrecht (Law Code), which was a compilation, reworking, and summation of all the laws and codes. Includes the codes of: Judicial Procedure; Court Laws; State Laws; Police Law; Forestry, hunting, and fishing regulations; Etc. It became a widespread the model for law and legislation for over 150 years. Stobbe II, 366. Very Scarce. Only a handful of copies are recorded in U.S. libraries. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! CHEST 2/1

New Turkish Paperback. Demy 8vo. In Turkish. 258 p. Et-tuhfetu'l-mülûkiyye fi'd-devleti't-Türkiyye: Türk devleti konusunda sultânlara armagan, (1252-1312). Baybars al-Mansuri (Rukn ad-Din Baybars ad-Dawadar al-Man?uri al-Kha?a?i), (?-1325). He was purchased from the prince of Mosul in c. 1260 and participated in several of Qalawun's campaigns during the reign of sultan Baibars. In 1284, he was given command of fifty horsemen. In 1287, he was appointed governor of Al Karak, a post which he held until Qalawun's death in 1290. After his first work (a historiographical work, known as Zubdat al-fikra fi ta'rikh al-hijra; "quintessence of thought in Muslim history"), his second work, Al-Tuhfa al-mulukiyya fi l-dawla al turkiyya, is based on the Zubda and covers only the Bahri period, 1250-1325. His Zubda is a universal chronicle which ends just prior to his death, and it is by far the more informative work, but the Tuhfa contains some original content as well. Both works rely heavily on Ibn Abd al-Zahir. Both works were written with the help of the Coptic scribe Ibn Kabar.
