Judge Jeremie was appointed Attorney-General in Mauritius and arrived from England in 1832 to announce abolition without indemnity to a hostile reception of sugar planters and slave owners. Slavery was finally abolished in 1835 but not before the owners received ?2,000,000 compensation from the British. After accusing Mauritian judges of involvement in slavery, Sir John Jeremie was honoured in 1836 by the Anti-Slavery Society.

William Jay (17891858), American jurist and reformer, was the son of John Jay (1745-1829), American patriot, statesman, and Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. For most of the period from 1818 to 1843 he served as Judge of the county court of Westchester, N.Y. An active abolitionist, Jay helped establish (1833) the New York City Anti-Slavery Society and wrote vigorous pamphlets and articles on the topic.
