Three Pamphlets Issues by the Republican Congressional Campaign Committee on Free Trade

189443553n.p.: Hartman & Cadick 1894. First editions. Self wrappers. Good to very good. 8 pp. 8 pp. 8 pp. 8vo. The mid-term elections of 1884 were a disaster for the Democrats led by Grover Cleveland. Republicans and Populists in large part due to the efforts of Joseph Weeks Babcock 1850-1909 a Republican Congressman from Wisconsin who helped organize the Republican Congressional Campaign Committee in 1893 and was a major force in routing the Democrats in the 1894 House elections which cost the Democrats 113 of their 218 seats. They are most likely printed by Hartman & Cadick Republican printers. All follow the same format of quoting leading figures and using bold face type. 1: Caption title "If the Laboring Class be to Perish I Say the Whole Nation." A the head of the title: No. 1 - From the Congressional Record. The caption title is from the English Reformer William Cobbett followed by "You cannot reduce the laborer to a state of starvation and degradation without also destroying national prosperity" a quote from Joseph Norton Dolph 1835-1897 Senator from Oregon from one of his many speeches quoted here. OCLC locates only a single copy at the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center. A very good copy docketed on front wrapper mail fold. 2: Caption title "The industrial side of the tariff controversy must not be overlooked. The four millions of people who work in our factory system are the most potent factors outside of agriculture in our civilization." - Hon. J. W. Babcock Wisconsin. A the head of the title: Record No. 3. Apparently unrecorded. We could find no copies in OCLC NUC or other reference sources. Chip to front wrapper else very good with docketing stamp. 3: Caption title "When you Rob the Laboring Men of their Employment you Rob the Farmers of their Customers." The quote from the caption title belongs to Charles Curtis 1860-1936 Republican from Kansas who would go on to become Hoover's Vice President. OCLC locates one copy at the Western Reserve Historical Society Library. A good copy browned some minor chipping docketing stamp on front wrapper. [Hartman & Cadick?] unknown

Treaty Between Her Majesty and the Oriental Republick of the Uruguay for the Abolition of the Traffick in Slaves Signed at Monte-Video July 13 1839

A very rare treaty between Queen Victoriaâ€™s Britain and the â€œOriental Republick of the Uruguayâ€ printed in both English and Spanish in two parallel columns throughout. According to the text the parties were â€œmutually animated by a sincere desire to co-operate for the utter extinction of the barbarous Traffick in Slaves.for the special purpose of immediately attaining this object so far as relates to the total and final abolition of the Slave Trade of the Oriental Republick of the Uruguay.â€ The treaty is comprised of fourteen original articles plus three annexes totaling forty-six additional articles and four additional articles at the end covering a host of issues pertaining to the suppression of the slave trade. These issues included enforcement procedures the establishment of â€œMixed Courts of Justiceâ€ â€œRegulations in respect to treatments of liberated negroesâ€ and much more. With regard to slaves found on international vessels the two nations hoped for â€œpermanent good treatment and a full and complete emancipation according to the humane intentions of the Parties of the Treaty.â€<br /> <br /> The present treaty was part of a larger effort by the British Crown to put an end to the transatlantic slave trade in the first half of the 19th century; at this same time Britain had reached terms on a similar treaty with the Republic of Texas and other nations. The document is signed at the end in type by J.H. Mandeville and Jose Ellauri representatives of the two countries who originally signed the treaty at Montevideo on July 13 1839; the present work was â€œPresented to both Houses of Parliament by Command of Her Majestyâ€ in 1842 likely due to bureaucratic delays. Uruguay would have been an important ally for Great Britain in monitoring the seas against the transatlantic slave trade given its position opposite the South Atlantic Ocean from West Africa. Tribute of the Chamber of Commerce of the State of New York to the Memory of Horace B. Claflin

188629001127New York: Atlantic Publishing & Engraving of New York 1886. The front cover and first page of the booklet are detached. The title on the front cover is faded and hard to read. General soiling and toning due to age. The bulletin has been folded. The large format memoriam is trimmed on the edges. Two items advertising the memorial of Horace Brigham Claflin who was an American merchant who founded the Bulkley & Claflin Company later after Claflin's death it became known as H. B. Claflin Company. Over the years this bank was acquired many times and is still in existence today under JP Morgan Chase. The first item is apparently from the Dry Goods Bulletin which serves as an memoriam/obituary for Claflin. The front side has an engraving of Claflin as well as his birth and death dates December 18 1811 - November 14 1885. The back side has a description of his life. Measures 14 1/4" x 12 3/4". The second item is a 16 pg booklet done by the New York Chamber of Commerce that is the minutes of the meeting following Claflin's death as well as a biographical sketch of the man. The booklet states that "Mr. Claflin was one of the great merchants which the present century has produced and his life and character present a striking illustration of the maxim 'Act well your part there all the honor lies.' " pg. 3 The meeting end with several resolutions one of which was "the entire community of dry good merchants are called upon to mourn the loss not only of the most eminent member of their profession but also of a true friend." pg. 11 #1 This was accomplished when on the day of his funeral "the wholesale stores and commission houses throughout the dry goods district in New York City closed at noon and business was suspended. That portion of the City usually so active and busy was silent and deserted." pg. 15 The booklet also includes a portrait engraving of Claflin. Black covers. Measures 9 1/4" x 6" This was a dry good business that acted as middlemen between the manufacturers and retailers of dry goods. Additionally he founded the Continental Bank of New York in 1870 along with Jacob H. Schiff Marcellus Hartley Robert L. Cutting and Joseph Seligman.
