Trade card for the renowned Dutch chocolate maker Van Houten which invented a treatment of cocoa to remove the bitter taste known as "Dutch process" chocolate. The inventions of Van Houten led to the mass production and world wide distribution of chocolate which took place in the nineteenth century. <br /> <br /> The front of the card with color map of Australia showing Western Australia Northern Territory South Australia Queensland New South Wales Victoria and Tasmania. The map shows Coolgardie but not Kalgoorlie. Verso with a dark green Art Deco border and Art Deco text font with data on Australia. Population is listed as 4006000. Below this is the heading "The six British Colonies united to form a Federation are": West Australia South Australia Victoria New South Wales Queensland Tasmania. Statistical information including the square miles and population are given for each of these colonies as well as the capital of each and its population. The number of Aborigines is listed at 230000. 3 7/8 x 3 3/8". Corners very gently rubbed. Not found on Trove. unknown

Denmark was the first souvereign state in the world to abandon the slave trade by a decree issued in 1792. This did not mean that the trade was hereby stopped. When France and England in 1831 and 1833 in conventions banned the trade the Danish king Frederik VI issued this decree of 1835 to support these conventions. The decree of 1835 contains a detailed Criminal Law for transport of slaves over the Atlantic.The decree was issued in two forms at the same time one with only Danish text and one with Danish and German paralelltext the version offered. </em> unknown

Trapani 1840-49.</p><p>Small folio pp. 196 of pre-printed shipping manifest forms of which 137 completed in ink; contemporary flexible vellum-backed marbled paper boards with ink-lettered label to upper board; corners bumped and spine a little chipped.</p><p>Fine documentation of the maritime trade from the harbour of Trapani in Sicily. The manifest gives bills of lading from January 1840 to March 1849. The pre-printed manifests are completed in ink giving the name of the freight ship and its captain the destination and then details of its freight i.e. type and quantity of merchandise names of senders and recipients.</p><p>Trapani boasts some of Europe's oldest salt marshes and salt extraction has been a major business for centuries which still flourishes to the present day. By the nineteenth century Sicilian sea salt was exported to European countries as far away as Norway and Russia. These shipping manifests document that it was sent to destinations as far afield as Constantinople Abo Stavanger Carlscrona Stockholm Bergen Odessa Reval and Riga.</p><p>Clearly some of the shippers acted on their own account being both captains of the ship and shipper whereas others acted on commission. The shipping routes went through Russian waters which explains the accounts kept by the Russian Vice Consulate.</p>

Attractively produced gun catalogue issued by one of Great Britain's most storied rifle manufacturers and gunsmith to the Queen. M.; 8 3/4 x 11 1/2; relief shown by hachures and gradient tints; small reference table in the lower half of the image; edges brittle with small chips and cuts; overall in good to very good condition. A scarce collection of maps their publication began in January of 1871 with no less than 3 maps being published every day. Samuel Morse's invention of the telegraph had made it possible to easily observe gather and transmit data from different points over the entire country. A small note at the head read: "All observations made at the same moment of actual not local time." Released by the US Army's Signal Service the maps were intented to be primarily used by farmers and merchants. They were published in at least three different sizes and formats the current being one of the smaller ones. These particular maps showed precipitation and wind velocity at various elevation points. The printed paper wrapperstwo brads split to upper spine tell us that Albert Grosfeld's main showroom was on Third Avenuce in New York City but he also had showrooms in Chicago and Los Angele. Is is accompanied by 100 placards showing the furniture on offer. Each card measures 7 5/8 by 9 1/2 inches and bears a photographic illustration of the piece along with a printed description stock number and dimensions As follows: 1111/20150 Adam Satinwood Writing Desk hand-decorated leather top. MADE IN ENGLAND. H. 38". W. 42". D. 23". Very good condition.The company seems to have specilaized in high end reproductions of antique furniture. This promotional publication by the Wichita Board of Trade was published to counter the "malignant attacks" conducted by "powerful newspapers all over the country" who have "deliberately leveled their batteries at Wichita." The promotional contains an historical overview of Wichita in the cattle trade information on crops and capabilities of Kansas and calls Wichita "The Southwestern Metropolis." Illustrations include street cars telegrams churches private residences and schools. Containing also a directory of wholesale business information on Wichita's railroads and railway connections lists of industrial enterprises the meat packing centers the livestock market and information on taxes and building enterprises. In addition there are numerous advertisements for various businesses in Wichita. Light cosmetic touch-up to the spine and extremities by a master paper conservator else an attractive informational and scarce promotional for Wichita. Housed in a quarter leather and color decorated boards with raised bands and titles stamped in gilt on the spine. Not in Adams Herd. Not in Graff Eberstadt or Howes. OCLC locating only three copies. Illlustration of the sack of Royal Bone Phosphate against a back drop of brightly flowering plants at rear wrapper. Mild overall rubbing with some softness to leather at head and heel; top edge gilt slightly oxidized; still a sound Very Good copy in a quite lovely mid-19th c. gift binding. Early pencil gift inscription to a Mary F. Sisson dated 1854. <br /> <br /> A religious and temperance miscellany mostly short moral tales with a few verse works interspersed. T.S. Arthur 1809-1885 is best-remembered for his hugely popular temperance trace Ten Nights in A Bar-Room and What I Saw There 1854 but he was an incredibly prolific writer churning out more than 100 titles between 1840 and the early 1880s. 1893171903Z. Takenouchi. 明治 26 1893. Striking black and white wood engraved illustrations 32pp 26.6 x 19.5cm very good copy. This is a fascinating catalogue of Takenouchi Safes from 1893 with detailed illustrations specifications and prices. Takenouchi was the first safe manufacturer in Japan and the business was very successful numbering the Royal Household and major companies amongst their clients. The idea of the business started soon after Yokohama was opened as a trading port. The founder's father an iron monger was asked to repair a British businessman's safe after it was damaged by fire. He learned how effective the safe was in protecting its contents from the fire. Since fires were frequent and hazardous in Japan his son Zenjiro Takenouchi founded the business to produce fireproof safes in Japan. The company obtained numerous patents and had the reputation for safes that were extremely robust and difficult to break-in. This reputation still survives today. <br> <br>The catalogue includes beautiful engravings of the company's shopfront factory and trademarks and of numerous versions of its safes. These show the thick steel doors which were elegantly decorated with distinctively Japanese designs including images of pine trees. The inner drawers of the safes were made of paulonia wood which protects the contents from humidity. The brochure gives specifications and prices weighing scales also illustrated details of the effectiveness of safes letters of appreciation from clients who managed to rescue their valuables from fire hazards and a list of businesses who used their safes.
