An extensively illustrated and very rare Mumbai-printed trade catalogue advertising goods for the British market in India encompassing an extraordinary range of products from gunpowder to soap and everything in between with numerous coloured plates.Treacher & Co. were a prominent British-run firm operating as merchants druggists and chemists based in Bombay Mumbai and Poona Pune during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This extensive catalogue presents a vivid picture of colonial consumption and supply advertising an exhaustive array of merchandise including toiletries; crockery; agricultural machinery and flower and vegetable seeds; pipes; sporting equipment and 'Gymkhana kit' including Brooks' bicycle saddles for both men and women bicycle pumps dumbbells and Sandow's Obesity Reducer and Sandow's Combined Developer; alcoholic drinks as well as 'Sparklet's' carbonation tablets and 'Seltzogenes for the production of sodawater lemonade gingerade &c.'; parlour games including board games billiards roulettes and table bowls; cameras; books and medical remedies; jewellery; and more. The catalogue features numerous plates many chromolithographic or printed on coloured paper advertising china sets gunpowder biscuits tar and vinolia soaps California poppy perfumes Windsor & Newton's paints and hair lotions inter alia. Catalogue XI has been punched for a three-ring binder. splotch to from cover of Catalogue X. Very good and quite scarce. OCLC only locates one instance of each catalog and both are at the California State Library their copy of Catalogue X is lacking pp. 35-46. Very good.Remco Redwood Pipe Company was known for using old-growth redwood timber in its Redwood piping manufacturing. Using massive amounts of redwood in their pipes and the pipes were lauded as they were large-diameter lightweight and durable. They were used primarily used for municipal water systems irrigation and industrial purposes. With the growing power of the environmentalist movement the use of old-growth redwood was seen as a cardinal sin rightly so and they eventually bowed to public pressure and ceased manufacturing their pipes. Greg King the author of Ghost Forest relates this ironic tidbit; " â€œI point first to Wiggington Creed. Creed a powerful Bay Area attorney married into the Hooper clan who were the worldâ€™s biggest redwood merchants. After the death of the most powerful brother in 1916 Creed inherited his assets which included lumber. In 1919 he also became one of the five founding directors of Save the Redwoods League. The following year he wrote the Leagueâ€™s articles of incorporation and bylaws. And at the same time he accepted the presidentâ€™s position at PG&E. Now PG&E was the worldâ€™s largest consumer of stave redwood pipes at that time. The largest producer of those stave pipes was the Redwood Manufacturers Company or Remco. And Wiggington Creed was president of thatâ€¦â€ Redwoods Manufacturing Company unknown
