trad. di Giovanna Stefancich bross. edit. ill., piega in cop.
135 pages including index. In this tribute to a city he loves, author provides both a history and a character study, describing Glasgow at different moments in time: the medieval city; the eighteenth-century expansion; the mid-Victorian heyday; the Edwardian sunset; the Depression of the 1930s; post-war decline; the renaissance of the 1980s. Examines the economic function of the city at each of these periods, drawing attention to characteristic architecture and to representative individuals, posing questions about the relation of Glasgow to the rest of Scotland, and exploring the paradox that Europe's City of Culture should have owed its wealth to its trade with the New World, and should be arguably the easternmost American city. Illustrated with black and white colour plates. Gift inscription upon half-title page else unmarked. Minimal wear. Excellent copy. Book

"Improvement of British commerce formed the inspiration for Postlethwayt's final major works, Britain's Commercial Interests Explained and Improv'd and Great Britain's True System, both published in 1757. The former, though not a very innovative work, was especially strong on advocating expansion of the Union by including Ireland and encouraging agricultural improvement to cheapen the necessities of life, permitting lower wages and increased competitiveness in foreign markets. They were also designed to secure his own self-improvement through patronage, a strategy which was apparently unsuccessful. Together with the dictionary, these books contained the economic contributions for which Postlethwayt has been largely noted in the literature on the history of economic ideas." - Oxford DNB. Scholar's initial to inner cover (Jenifer Neils). Else fine. ; Greek vases have been among antiquity's most widely collected artefacts since the 18th century. This volume examines trends in the collection and trade of Greek vases in the years since World War II. Norskov combines a detailed historical narrative with case studies of eight major museum collections, plus an analysis of auction and dealer documents listing 18,000 Greek vases, to provide a comprehensive overview of the subject. The volume highlights a major scholarly shift in the 1960s which broadened the gap between museum collections, which adopted the new contextual approach, and the collections of individuals who selected items for their aesthetic value. The growing curatorial emphasis on context also lent weight to emerging ethical concerns as the relation between unprovenanced objects and the destruction of archaeological sites became an international issue. ; 10.0 X 6.9 X 1.4 inches; 304 pages
