Costello's translation of Cabanès' Cabinet secret de l'histoire première série the sole edition in English and an interesting if at times gruesome complication of medical anecdotes medical humor celebrity lore and titillation.<br>Â Â Â Â Cabanès 18621928 was a medical doctor historian and successful writer of a goodly number of works of fiction and history with a subspecialty of historical medical mysteries. Carrington was a leading British publisher "abroad" of late-Victorian and Edwardian pornography/erotica for "bibliophiles" much of it flagellatory; there have been significant essays on him and his works but Wikipedia provides one irresistible sentence: "Carrington went blind as a result of syphilis and the last few years of his life were spent in poverty as his mistress stole his valuable collection of rare books."<br>Â Â Â Â The chapters in this publication are: A youthful indiscretion of Louis XIV The fistula of a great king The maladies of Louis XV The semi-impotency of Louis XVI The first pregnancy of Marie-Antoinette Louis XVI in private life One of the judges of Marie-Antoinette: the surgeon Souberbielle What was Marat's disease Talleyrand and the doctors The accouchement of the empress Marie-Louise The ancestors of Marshal Mac-Mahon and Gambetta's eye.<br>Â Â Â Â Nicely printed with title-page in black and red and text block issued untrimmed this is a copy of the trade edition: There was a deluxe issue on Japan vellum limited to 30 copies.<br>Â Â Â Â Provenance: "Virginia Pritchard Hilton-Green my father's book. Vintage Original Hardcover Trade Edition Stated First Series 1897 Charles Carrington Paris 239 pages plus 7 page index and 4 pages of advertisements for other books. Very Good no DJ - as issued. Minor shelf/edge wear to navy blue cloth with decorative blind-stamped borders and gilt spine titles - corners sharp with a touch of wear to the two bottom corners. No previous owner markings - all pages are clean unmarked and unevenly cut. Top edge gilt TEG. Blue endpapers. Previous owner has pasted a small ad 3/4" by 3" from an antique book catalog that describes the book as being rare on the inside front cover at the top left corner. This is the Trade Edition printed on "Van Gelder azure hand-made paper" as stated on the page preceding the preface. The publisher Charles Carrington 1857–1921 was a leading British publisher of erotica in late-19th- and early-20th-century Europe. He was notorious for producing legitimate literary works to mask his activities making erotica and pornography. This is certainly an unusual book described in the ad previously mentioned above - "In which certain information regarding the personal hygiene of Royalty not generally accorded the privilege of publication in ordinary books is printed". Or in modern parlance disturbing and sometimes disgusting essays on the unusual medical conditions of notable and royal personages of the time. Both volumes in original wrappers.<br /> <p><br /> <p><br /> The Napoleonic Wars and the loss of the American colonies resulted in a political turmoil and economic disaster in Spain in the first half of the 19th century. A shift in the economics and the modernization of the country seemed to be the path to overcome the crisis. Among many signs of progress an attempt was to make the Tagus River Rio Tajo the longest river in the Iberian Peninsula navigable by steamships on its entire length from Aranjuez to Lisbon to facilitate the transport of people and goods thus strengthen the country’s internal market.<br /> <p><br /> <p><br /> The plan was designed by Francisco Javier de Cabanes 1781–1834 a multitalented Spanish military historian in cooperation with an engineer AgustÃn Marco-Artu. Although the plan has never been realized the present work shows Cabanes' profound and systematic preparations. The text volume contains a prologue and detailed indexes and the sixty-three pages of the report on the project “Memoria relativa á la navegacion del Rio Tajo†which is divided into twelve sections and the conclusion exposing the advantages and the obstacles of the plan and the possibilities of its realization. This part is followed by the appendix the most extensive part of the book with extraordinary value. It contains a collection of 177 documents related to the plans and survey of the navigability of Tagus from the earliest attempt by Juan Bautista Giovanni Battista Antonelli in 1581–1582 through Luis Carduchi’s and Carlos Simón Pontero’s surveys in 1641 and 1755 to Cabanes’ own survey executed by AgustÃn Marco-Artu in 1828. The maps of 1641 1755 and the 1828 surveys with short explanations are included in the lithographed atlas.<br /> <p><br /> <p><br /> Both volumes are preserved in their original wrappers which is remarkably rare and particularly significant especially in the case of the atlas as the Paris imprint of Engelmann is only indicated on its cover. In many collections the two volumes are bound together thus this information became lost and the lithographed maps are attributed to Miguel de Burgos in Madrid the printer of the text volume. The text tome is bound into blue paper the panels are framed with an ornamental double-rule.
