Con le “Osservazioni sulla Tortura” Pietro Verri dà una spinta fondamentale al dibattito sette-ottocentesco sui delitti e sulle pene, nel cui solco si inserirà anche il Manzoni della Colonna Infame. In quest’opera Verri esamina per primo la vicenda dei processi agli untori durante la peste di Milano del 1630, proponendo una riflessione che favorisce una svolta decisiva nella cultura giuridica italiana. Il testo, composto a partire dal 1776, era stato pubblicato postumo solo nel 1804. Qui per la prima volta le Osservazioni sulla Tortura sono pubblicate in una edizione critica basata sul manoscritto autografo, accompagnata da un apparato diacronico genetico. Le varianti d’autore emerse attraverso lo studio dell’officina dell’autore permettono di seguire l’elaborazione del testo e il pensiero di Verri nelle diverse fasi della stesura. Conclude il volume una Nota al testo in cui sono descritti i testimoni, la datazione del lavoro di Verri e i criteri alla base dell’edizione. In Appendice è posta una sezione per presentare le varianti troppo estese per essere integrate nell’apparato. Autori: Pietro Verri. Curatori: Margherita De Blasi.
