1610A55C18G3BJ1V1610. 56; 16 125 3 blank pp. Ad 1: Rare first and only edition of Savaron's treatise on the history of the sword in France its use and the right to bear a sword as arms. Savaron dedicated the book to King Louis XIII "the sword of the world".Ad 2: Rare first edition of a curious treatise against the mania and dangers of dueling. This mania had grown so great that in the preceding 20 years about 8000 noblemen had been killed by their opponents on the dueling ground. Authorities and critics bemoaned the dueling mania in part because the de facto toleration of the practice seemed to concede that the nobility was above the law subject only to a code of conduct of its own. Jean Savaron 1566-1622 was a French historian and writer from Clermont. He also was a lawyer in Bordeaux and advised the court of Montferrand. Later he became a lieutenant general of the sénéchaussée in Avergne. With owner's inscription of J.P. Gautin including date 4 September 1610 at head of first title-page and a similar inscription shaved at head of second title-page; owner's initials "L.C. de T" in what appears to be a contemporary hand. Slightly browned but otherwise in very good condition. Binding rubbed and spine damaged but structurally sound and with most of the tooling clear. Two early complimentary treatises on sword fighting and against dueling.l Brunet V col. 153 ad 1 & 2; Cionarescu XVII 61664 & 61665; Cockle addendum 7 ad 1; Levi and Gelli p. 412 ad 2; Thimm p. 257 ad 1 & 2; WorldCat 6 & 8 copies; not in Sloos Warfare; Vigeant; for Savaron: NBG XLIII cols. 386-387. unknown

Old armorial ex-libris bookplate. Some paper flaws and rough cuts not affecting text. Two satirical anonymous occult texts taking aim at Rosicrucianism. The first is written in the form of a dialogue between a cabalist Comte de Gabalis and a skeptic. The five “entretiens†or interviews attempt to discount the Paracelsian doctrine on elementary spirits and parody alchemy divination and astrology. Whether deliberate or not the book revealed many secrets closely held in the Rosicrucian and Jansenist circles and for this slight Villars was murdered 3 years after publication of the first edition 1670.

The second text purports to be of the same authorship but this would be impossible as the first edition offered here was published 45 years after Villars’ death. Brunet and other bibliographers have ascribed it to Antoine Androl. The narrative piggybacks off Comte de Gabalis describing and denouncing the elemental spirits of genies and gnomes.

I. VD17 1 :063003N ; STC Netherlands 119722909
II. Publication of the Pauli-Villars regularization P-V an important principle in quantum theory. Pauli and Villars's paper was a direct inspiration for Julian Schwinger's "On gauge invariance and vacuum polarization" 1951 his greatest and most-cited paper; Schwinger one of the founders of modern quantum electrodynamics shared the Nobel Prize with Feynman and Tomonaga in 1965.
. unknown

Marshal de Castries and Marquis de Vogué called upon Anquetil to restore authentic and reliable memoirs and render justice to one of Louis XIV's greatest generals; they lent him for this purpose 142 notebooks of memoirs of 32p. folio and 14 volumes of letters. Anquetil therefore undertook a vast work of compilation and made the Duke speak in the first person using the letters as aid. All the documents were subsequently deposited in the Sainte Geneviève library. Blue stamp ""Bibliothèque Christian Kieher"" on endpapers. Chez Moutard hardcover
