1841C58583Paris 1841. Neat nineteenth-century ownership inscription to title page. Some light foxing esp to first few pages. Binding little rubbed and scuffed. Otherwise very good. 133 2pp. Inscribed on a slip pasted to the half-title 'Monsieur le Baron De Crespy-Le Prince' and underneath in another hand 'De la part tres expresse de l'Auteur Felices Des Portes.' The dedicatee is presumably the artist Charles Edouard Le Prince Baron de Crespy 1784-1850. A note pasted to the front endpaper states that the inscription is in the autograph of Napoleon III but it is more likely that of an amanuensis. Reflections on British political history under the Stuarts and the revolution of 1688 with one eye on the future of the French monarchy. Written during the future emperor's imprisonment in the Citadel at Ham an engraved view of which is included as the book's frontispiece. Bound with a 28 page article by Leon Faucher 'Les Colonies Penales de L'Angleterre' extracted from La Revue des Deux Mondes 01/02/1843. Faucher went on to be one of Louis Napoleon's ministers. Red buckram quarter-bound with red calf spine ruled and lettered gilt. From the library of Allan Heywood Bright 1862 - 1941 Liberal politician distinguished book collector and author of books on Middle English with his calling card loosely inserted. hardcover
