Rare finely bound example of the Memoirs of Napoleon with a fine fore-edge painting of Napoleon on horseback leading his troops to battle. 12mo. bound in full red morocco gilt titles and tooling to the spine gilt vignettes to the front and rear panels gilt turn ins all edges gilt. In near fine condition with light rubbing. The earliest fore-edge paintings date possibly as far back as the 10th century; these earliest paintings were symbolic designs. Early English fore-edge paintings believed to date to the 14th century presented heraldic designs in gold and other colors. The first known example of a disappearing fore-edge painting where the painting is not visible when the book is closed dates from 1649. The earliest signed and dated fore-edge painting dates to 1653: a family coat of arms painted on a 1651 Bible. Around 1750 the subject matter of fore-edge paintings changed from simply decorative or heraldic designs to landscapes portraits and religious scenes usually painted in full color. Modern fore-edge painted scenes have a lot more variation as they can depict numerous subjects not found on earlier specimens. These include scenes that are erotic or they might involve scenes from novels like Jules Verne Sherlock Holmes or Dickens etc. In many cases the chosen scene will depict a subject related to the book but in other cases it did not. In one instance the same New Brunswick landscape was applied to both a Bible and to a collection of poetry and plays. The choice of scenes is made by either the artist bookseller or owner thus the variety is wide. One page. Folio. Handsome document signed by the gallant and flamboyant brother-in-law of Napoleon. Murat was one of Napoleon's boldest marshals who played a prominent role in each of the major campaigns; nonetheless at the time this document was signed Murat was negotiating with the Allies and eventually agreed to provide troops to fight against France in exchange for a guarantee of his throne and possessions. Ultimately however after Waterloo he was captured by the Allies executed and shot. It is said that as he faced the firing squad he shouted:<br/><br/><br/><br/> "Soldiers do your duty! Straight to the heart - but spare the face. Fire!"<br/><br/><br/><br/>"Murat was one of the most colorful figures of his time. His military talents on the battlefield at the head of the cavalry were considerable but his rash initiatives robbed him of any chance of earning repute as a strategist. Three portraits of the young Belle Époque actress Kathryn Kidder flanked by four full length photographs of her in costume taken by Napoleon Sarony the greatest photographer of the American theater. Frank Mayo and John G. Wilson's play based on "Vineta the Phantom City" a translation of a novel by E. Werner opened in 1884 in Chicago with Laura Don as Wanda but when Don left for California Kidder was given the role as the play moved to New York and Mayo went all out to promote her. Kathryn Kidder 1867-1839 was born In Newark or Evanston Ill various reports and was privately educated until she attended the North Western Female College where Emma Willard received her degree. Her early rise was described in 1885 at the time of this poster: "Frank Mayo meantime had heard of this promising pupil and at once hunted her up with a view to offering her the character of the Countess Wanda in his play of 'Nordeck.' After a careful study of the character and its possibilities she accepted Mr. Mayo's offer and spoke of the character to a friend in these words: 'It is a part I would have chosen if I had been consulted and given my choice; and whatever the future may bring much shall be ascribed to the very fortunate opportunity afforded me in the character of the lovely Countess Wanda.' This character in 'Nordeck' is indeed lovely as Miss Kidder says. The author has suggested a character that is quite ideal and the young actress has clothed it with life and naturalness while portraying the romantic possibilities of the creation with all the enthusiasm of a young girl in the first flower of fulfillment. And it is not too much to say that the character of Wanda is due largely to Miss Kidder's efforts whether unaided or otherwise; for her lines allow rather than demand the character that she portrays. Miss Kidder is tall with a bright rather than simply beautiful face a figure that is willowy and lithe and motions that are at one and the same time impetuous and graceful. Beautifully bound in 3/4 green morocco over orange cloth marbled endpapers raised bands with compartments lettered and decorated with "bees" used as Napoleon's emblem to represent his status as Emperor top edge gilt all others uncut. The earliest fully-fledged publication by William Burges. Iconography was to play a very important part in his architectural oeuvre - both ecclesiastical secular. This ephemeral work launched Burges as an architectural scholar. I sheds considerable light on his aesthetic ideals during his formative years. After studying the Doge's Palace in Venice he paid a visit to the young Paris gothic revivalist Adolphe-Napoleon Didron. Didron made a similar study of th Doge's Palace and agreed to publish Burges study with the proviso that his ow notes on the Doge's Palace be included along with illustrations. N.p. "22 dimanche" 1849. Brett's reply dated Paris April 30 1849. 2pp. 210 x 135 mm. Small hole where seal was broken light soiling along folds. Provenance: Latimer Clark.</p> <p>The Abbé Moigno an eminent mathematician physicist and science writer authored several works on telegraphy. His correspondent John Brett laid the first submarine telegraph cable between England and France in 1850 and was one of the founders of the Atlantic Telegraph Company. Moigno's letter to Brett written the year before Brett laid his first submarine cable asks Brett for news of his current researches "N'avez-vous rien de nouveau à m'apprendre Quand ferez-vous une nouvelle expérience" and asks Brett to supply him with an electric battery for a M. Soleil "M. Soleil n'ose pas me dire qu'il a absolument besoin de la pile mais je m'en aperçois chaque jour. Pourriez vous fixer à peu près l'époque à laquelle vous pourrez la rendre".
