Some splitting along the joints making the boards a bit wobbly but binding still quite sound. According to The Cambridge Modern History although these letters purported to be written by an Englishman they were actually translated from the French and "the original draft was secretly dictated by Napoleon to Las Cases. They were designed to impress the British public with the sufferings of the exiles and to furnish a defence to those episodes in Napoleon's career which had proved most repugnant to British opinion-- the execution of the Duc d'Enghein the death of Captain Wright the treatment of the Spanish Bourbons and the return from Elba.
