New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 150 p. Tobacco smuggling in the Black Sea region of the Ottoman Empire, 1883-1914. With the founding of the Régie in 1883, Ottoman tobacco producers were suddenly faced with a new company that took control over their mainstay crop. Tobacco producers and merchants who had problems with this new system came up with a variety of responses. One of these responses was the hiding and smuggling of the crop, and the number of tobacco smugglers rapidly increased. Many people from different sectors of the economy collaborated with the smugglers in order to make more money. The Ottoman government, worked to resolve the problems between the company and those working in the tobacco sector, but it failed to find a solution that would be satisfactory to all or that qualitatively would change the situation. It was the result of the different definition of ¿who is a smuggler' question by the government and the Régie. In the face of such vastly differing parameter, the Ottoman government could not reach a compromise with the Régie. Nor did the government create a new, alternative administration to the Régie because of the agreements between the Ottoman Public Debt Administration and the state. Within this context, this study examines the role of the ordinary people and the role of the organized movement against the monopolization of a crop. It is an attempt to show how the crowds in tobacco sector reacted to the changes in your daily lives.

380 p. Curiously illustrated by the author in a naive style. Worn original full cloth binding. Lacks endpapers. Large 8vo. 23 cm. A remarkable self-published epic free verse poem that covers a vast landscape of late Victorian-American social and cultural issues and situations. Included is a chapter in black dialect. The heroine of the work is "Millie Floss." Though not a brilliant copy, the book is genuinely scarce. Bascom was a Prohibition Party politician in Steuben County, New York. pp. 316 + Plus color map frontis of Florida, color map of Stonewall Jackson's Valley Campaign, engraved portrait of Stonewall Jackson, Recumbent statue of General Lee. Illustrated with two maps of Civil War battlefield campaigns. Slightly browned. Penciled ownership of Bertie McKee. Top edge gold gilt. 8vo. Original full purple cloth binding, slightly worn. Henry Martyn Field (1822-1907) was one of a quartet of distinguished brothers. An author and clergyman he wrote extensively about his world travels. He went to Florida for his health and here, records his impressions of the state. It is an especially valuable account of the Civil War and race relations at the time. Here he makes the claim that segregation was part of human instinct which could not be overcome through legislation. Hi greatest early celebrity came from his marriage in the 1850s to Mlle. Henrietta Deluzy-Desportes, the one-time governess to the ill-fated Charles de Choiseul-Praslin, Duc de Praslin whose murder of his wife Fanny (daughter of Marshal Horace Sebastiani) and apparent suicide help set off the events leading to the overthrow of King Louis Philippe's reign in 1848.
