There is some early reinforcement to the verso of some of the folds map is a bit foxed. In addition to the large folding frontispiece map there are 4 engraved views including San Francisco Fort Sutter the redwood forest and Pyramid Lake; as well as 3 additional full page maps—Monterey Bay Panama and Tierra del Fuego. Cowan calls this "the most complete and extensive work descriptive of California published in France at this time" qtd. in Kurutz. Gabriel Ferry is a nom de plume of a father-son writing duo from France. The elder Eugene Louis Gabriel Ferry de Bellamare wrote most of the adventure novels attributed to the Gabriel Ferry name. He spent ten years in Mexico which assisted him with his writing of Costal L'Indien. It is unsure which novels are written by Ferry the elder and which are penned by Ferry the younger. In a half morocco binding with paper covered boards. Externally smart with rubbing to paper covered boards. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright with scattered spots throughout.
