1959008272London: Reg Hall 1959. RARE. Only 4 numbers published during the course of 1959 still an influential and useful source in the early heydays of the folk music revival in England. Overall Near Fine the summer issue with bottom corners creased two of the four numbers with "return to Pete" in red ink front covers. Laid in a 4 page handwritten letter from Reg Hall editor and publisher of Ethnic to Irwin Silber editor of the highly influential Sing Out ! A Folk Song Magazine which he co-founded with Pete Seeger and for which he served as editor from 1951 to 1967. Silber also founded Oak Publications. In the letter which begins " Dear Mr. Silber Thank you for your letter. I think it would be extremely important to us both to exchange copies of our magazines and I have entered your address in our files". Hall goes on to talk about Ethnic's editorial viewpoint apologizes for a misunderstanding over his reference to and use of the term "hootenanny" requests comments and criticisms discusses British traditional singers and offers his hospitality and advice on "who to see and hear and contact" for anybody coming to England. " In an aggressive style Ethnic championed the collection and study of authentic traditional style and repertoire in contradistinction to what its editors saw as a burgeoning revival movement based on false principles little knowledge and cosy middle-class fashion. The magazine included several important articles based on first-hand experience such as one on May Day at Padstow in issue number three and several on particular singers and musicians and its criticisms are also useful for evidence of a critical time in the post-war development of folklore studies and the folk-song and dance revival." BAL: 7168 First edition.<br /><br />Joel Chandler Harris December 9 1845 – July 3 1908 was an American journalist fiction writer and folklorist best known for his collection of Uncle Remus stories. Harris was born in Eatonton Georgia where he served as an apprentice on a plantation during his teenage years. He spent the majority of his adult life in Atlanta working as an associate editor at the Atlanta Constitution. Harris led two professional lives: as the editor and journalist known as Joe Harris he supported a vision of the New South with the editor Henry W. Grady 1880–1889 stressing regional and racial reconciliation after the Reconstruction era. As Joel Chandler Harris fiction writer and folklorist he wrote many 'Brer Rabbit' stories from the African-American oral tradition and helped to revolutionize literature in the process.<br /><br />Condition:<br /><br />Some staining to back cover previous owner's neat ink gift inscription to front end paper. Spine darkened and red title dulled 3" tear top edge half-title page light foxing to end pages period interesting bookplate front pastedown. From the collection of the Richard M. Dorson Memorial Library Folklore Institute Indiana University the only library indicators being its stamp verso of frontispiece and blindstamp to title page. With RARE and important three page ALS tipped to front end page sent from Leland at the Hotel Victoria Florence Italy to Mr Sampson noted linguist John Sampson possiby dated 1899 with "99" after heading. "Dear Mr Sampson I have written and sent you separately by this mail that which I contribute to our book." He then discusses his wishes for the Preface and Introduction before adding "The Tinkers. This is quite unfinished. It needs a great deal from you. Please note that I have got some queer items as to the Tinkers of old times." In the next paragraph he mentions Shelta Shelta Thari being an esoteric language spoken by the tinkers which Leland had discovered in 1876. He goes on to ask "Can you send me an Old Irish alphabet' and later "I hope it will not take you long to put together what you and Professor Meyer will give" referring to Professor Kuno Meyer a German scholar distinguished in the field of Celtic philology and literature. Then an address in Hamburg Germany where he can be reached after June and "Sincerely Charle G. Leland". While I can find no book that these three men published together Sampson and Meyer did much work later to carry forward research and knowledge of the Shelta language and customs.
