196931567Cambridge University Press. 1969. Hardcover. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. Scholar's bookplate to inner cover G. P. Goold. Foxing to top of textblock. Light edgewear to DJ.; Cambridge Classical Texts and Commentaries 11; 262 pages; An exhaustive study of Claudian's unfinished mythological epic with a text apparatus criticus and commentary. The long introduction begins with a catalogue of manuscripts; and this leads to an investigation into the manuscript tradition and the history of the poem's transmission. Dr Hall then surveys the most important printed editions of the poem. He examines various theories of dating and discusses the sources of the story. He concludes the introduction with a brief critical assessment of the form and style of the poem. Dr Hall establishes his text after an examination of all the extant manuscripts. The apparatus though very full is selective in that it records readings of younger manuscripts only when they offer something new. It also ignores trifling corruptions. The commentary is similarly selective. In general it discusses everything relevant to the establishing of the text and ignores points of purely mythological and literary interest. . 0521074428 . 199329701Cambridge University Press. 1993. Hardcover. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. Minor Foxing/dustsoiling to top of textblock. Scholar's bookplate to inner cover G. P. Goold. Minor edgewear along lower edge of DJ.; 216 pages; In recent years the subtlety and complexity of Apollonius' Argonautica have been better appreciated but in Dr Hunter's view the purposes and aesthetic of the epic are still not readily understood and much basic analysis remains to be done. The present book seeks to offer some of that analysis and to place the Argonautica within its social and intellectual context. A series of studies deal with notions of heroism; with eros and the suffering of Medea; the role of the divine; poetic voice and literary self-consciousness; and the Ptolemaic context of the poem. A pervasive theme of the book is Apollonius' creative engagement with Homer and a final chapter sketches out an approach to Virgil's use of Apollonius in the Aeneid. The Argonautica emerges as a brilliant and original experiment. This book is the only advanced study of the Argonautica currently available. All Greek is translated. . 0521413729 . 198811803Routledge. 1988. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good- in Very Good dust jacket. Corners are bumped. Pen lines to margins on about 9 pages. Pencil markings on 2 other pages. Small chip to one corner of DJ. Dustjacket has minor shelfwear and rubbing. Writing in pencil to front DJ flap.; 236 pages; In antiquity a considerable number of books of prophecies went under the general title of "Sibylline Oracles". Rulers as significant as Augustus consulted them in time of danger or crisis for advice and prognoses. Increasing numbers of "ex post facto" prophecies laying a particular interpretation on facts of recent history came to be attributed to one of the mysterious Sibyls. Perhaps the most famous of these is the Cumaean Sibyl who guides the hero in the sixth book of Vergil's "Aeneid" . In fact she was somewhat unusual in her similiarity to other oracular prophetesses such as the Pythia. For where the latter prophesied in response to particular inquirers one of the distinguishing characteristics of Sibyls was that they composed discursive verses for distribution to the world at large. This Professor Parke's last book which was virtually complete on his death in 1986 is an account of a subject both rarely treated in recent decades and difficult to access for all but the most expert. In its pursuit of the sometimes elusive Sibyls it ranges from Heraclitus to Eusebius from Archaic Asia Minor to Christian Rome. This book should be of interest to undergraduates postgraduates and academics of classics. . 0415003431 . Routledge hardcover
