Two volumes in one. pp. 198 (2); 234 (4). Lacks second (redundant) title page. Lightly foxed. Small 12mo. Contemporary full leather binding, spine gold gilt. Slight loss at tail. This is extremely scarce edition. The work explores the manners, customs, religion, entertainments, laws, and philosophies of the ancient Greeks. It was meant as a sort of organized synopsis of 'Voyage du Jeune Anacharsis en Greece' by Abbe Jean Jacques Barthelemy (1716-1795). The first edition of this work was published in 1788 (Paris: De Bure). Due to its immediate and enormous success several editions and reprints followed in short order. There was obviously a need for a handy epitome, which this work supplied. RARE. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! FR3

This posthumous collection of studies by Scheiber, the last of his own gathering, has turned into a sad event for scholars of Judaism and ethnography. Prof. Scheiber was the learned director of Budapest's Rabbinical Seminary for nearly forty years; during this period he educated several generations of rabbis and scholars, wrote 1500 publications, edited and contributed to a variety of scholarly journals and anthologies. The present volume collects, for the first time, his most important articles attempting a synthesis between the ethnography and literature of East and West.
