Two volumes containing a total of 365 beautifully hand-colored plates depicting the historic dress of villagers from various countries. Minor foxing to numerous plates occasionally entering into the image but mostly confined to the margins. Plates measure 103/8 inches 264mm in height. Bound in hardcover library cloth with unobtrusive stamps to top and bottom edge of closed pages with bookplates and stamps confined to the endpapers with no markings on the plates. Plates are titled at the top in French assigned a number and are given a brief description below the image. Many of the plates are credited at the bottom as "Musee Cosmopolite" while others are credited as "Musee de Costumes." Each is identified as having been printed by Aubert. Many of the artists are identified by their signature in the plate. There is no text associated with this publication. Volume I: Allemagne Germany 20 plates; Espagne Spain et Portugal 31 plates; Italie Italy 42 plates; France 86 plates. 14371Original engraving of Arab Costumes from the 1740s. Published in 1748. This rare engraving is from "Description de l´Univers." By Allain Manesson Mallet. Engraving depicts two men proudly wearing different Arabic costumes with mountains in the background. One wears a buttoned tunic kandura bisht overcoat pointed shoes and large turban with a decorative cane and his hand rests in his belt. The other wears a decorative collared kandura bisht overcoat pointed shoes and tall hat with long scarf coming from the hat. Decorative banner on top states "Arabes." Overall page size is 10" x 7.25." Image size is 5.5" x 7.5." Overall in very good condition. unknown books
14586Two original antique steel costume engravings of a Persian Iran Royal Officer and Noble woman printed in 1864. Overall size: 9" x 12.5." The plate illustrations are brightly colored and intricately detailed characterization of the traditional costumes of a Persian Royal Officer and Noble woman. In the engraving of the Royal Officer titled "Khatchadour D'hohannes: Officier du Prince Royal de Perse" his attire entails a vibrant green coat with gold trimmings which covers a gold-colored ensemble with a purple sash that stores his dagger. In the engraving of the Persian Woman titled "Dame Persane" she is depicted in traditional costume as imagined by Europeans in the 1800's. The woman is shown leaning against a banister wearing an embroidered white satin gown with a pink silk and fur trimmed coat and a feathered headdress. General age related toning. 1714WRCAM39055New York: Printed by William Bradford 1714. Broadside 7 1/4 x 11 1/2 inches. Edge toned lightly foxed. Very good. A very rare early 18th-century printed blank form for sea vessels likely from the press of William Bradford New York's first printer. The completed form would certify that the holder had cleared customs for a journey recording the name of his vessel and its tonnage arms crew origin and itinerary. The only recorded copies of this imprint have been found as endpapers in volumes of New York laws printed by William Bradford copies of which are held at the Library Company of Phialdelphia and at the Yale Law School Library. Further the final printed lines date the document to the reign of Queen Anne 1702-14 during which time Bradford was the only printer in New York. NAIP mzrecordcopy154. An attractive Meiji Era souvenir album with subtly hand-tinted collotype plates depicting a traditional Japanese wedding ceremony. One of several editions produced between 1906 and 1920; per the excellent bibliography of Tamamura's souvenir albums at ours would appear to be the Third Edition of 1910. Manuscript; 10 1/2 x 8; pp. 4; written in brown ink on "Custom House Philadelphia" stationary; a couple of small nicks to edges; age-toning to margins; very good condition. The report addressed to Charles Gilpin Esq. of the US District Attorney's Office describes the arrival of the Ship Bombay from Liverpool upon which various violations of current laws are discovered - there are 29 1/2 passengers when only 13 1/2 are allowed only 12 berths are present with the majority of them less than 2 ft. wide and one of them less than 6 ft. long the height of the booby hatch is 1 ft. 4 in. shorter than the one specified by law and so on. The last paragraph of the document specifies the fines to be imposed including $50 per head for the extra 16 passengers to the amount of $800 and $5 per head for the narrow berths for 29 1/2 passengers to the amount of $147.50 for a total of $947.50. Original printed patterned covers and printed title labels. Illustrated throughout with bw wood engravings and what appears to be the occasional copper engraving along with a very few color woodblock prints. A very interesting and exhaustive look at the customs of a Tôkyô deep into the process of transition from the traditional to the "modern" amalgam of cultural elements that was 20th century Japan. Written on the eve of the Russo-Japanese War which would hasten that transition. Well known as an important piece of early scholarship on the subject this original edition is by no means common.
