In a law dated 18 March 1776 Louis XVI attempted to rationalize the organization of provincial governments and the present manuscript is the resulting report on the actual ranks and classes of the various provincial government officials. The principal governors are listed by name with emoluments and the ranks and numbers of subordinate officials are also noted. The principality of Monaco a French protectorate gives genealogical information in addition to the names and fiscal details. The government of Corsica is described as the last of the second class provinces ff. 99-101. The manuscript includes a table of contents for the provinces and concludes with six pages of financial summaries.
This volume is of particular interest as it documents the French military and civil hierarchy on the eve of French involvement in the American Revolution. Notable figures with connections to the French participation include the Maréchal le Duc de Broglie governor of Metz who refused Lafayette's request to join. The Duc de Broglie was also patron of the Baron de Kalb. The Duc de Noailles governor of the royal house at Saint-Germain-en-Laye was the grandfather of Lafayette's wife. The comte de Rochambeau not named here was appointed in 1776 as governor of Villefranche; his rank is given as Major-Commandant 2600 livres.
Rare and beautiful and dense with information on French administrative practice under the ancien régime. unknown

Francois La Rochefoucauld - Francois VI, also called le Prince de Marcillac, Duc de la Rochefoucauld (1613-1680) was a French classical author. He is best known for his 'Memoires' (1664) and the 'Maximes' (1665). These epigrams are famous for the way that they express harsh or paradoxical truths in the briefest manner. La Rochefoucauld was a cynical observer of Louis XIV's court, who saw in human behavior mostly selfishness, hypocrisy, and weakness. In his pessimism La Rochefoucauld was very democratic - everybody is a sinner. His insights have influenced, amongst others, Lord Chesterfield, Franklin, Thomas Hardy, Nietzsche, Stendhal, and Gide. The droit d'aubaine of feudal origin stipulated that the lord inherited the estate of a foreigner or ""aubain"" when the latter died within his jurisdiction. This right was reclaimed under the Ancien Régime by European sovereigns notably in France. By the late eighteenth century however the prevailing tendency among the states of Western Europe was toward mutual renunciation of this right. Jean-Henri Decker unknown
51581with translation confirming to Louis-François Pascal de La Gillière b. 1719 late 2nd Naval Lieutenant in the Compagnie des Indes his pension of 200 livres p.a. previously paid by the Compagnie now to be paid by the royal Treasury printed in imitation of an upright cursive with manuscript details notes of later payments on verso 1 side 10¾" x 17" vellum Versailles 1st November Also signed by Antoine-Jean AMELOT d. 1795 Intendant des Finances 1774 Secretary of State for the Royal Household 1776-1783. He was known for refusing pensions to all and sundry unless they could show good cause: hence the detailed notes on this document indicating that the king had been given the necessary legal background. Amelot is remembered for his correspondence with Voltaire - they had a common opponent in De Brosses President of the Parlement de Dijon who was Voltaire's part-landlord. On Voltaire's return to Paris in 1784 after 28 years Amelot forbade the press to publish attacks on the old man and he signed the order allowing him to be buried away from Paris before the bishops could object. The present Rue Amelot running north west from the Bastille has borne his name since it was laid out in 1777. The Compagnie des Indes was begun by Richelieu in 1642. At one time when John Law was finance minister it had almost a monopoly of French foreign trade. hardcover
