Between 1897 and 1902 he was assigned to Madagascar and in 1907 being a major general in Oran he was ordered to occupy the Moroccan city of Oujda to suppress a revolt by the Beni Snassen in order to pacify the border giving rise to the campaigns of the French pacification of Morocco. . The binding is a very clean half-Moroccan leather with 5 raised bands and gold printed spine titles over marbled boards. The inside end papers are also marbled papers. The book is firmly bound clean and solid with contents pristine no marks or issues. . There mends to the first fly leaf and the and the old cover title page with some mild warping which continues the first 3/4 of the book lower edges. There is no visible stain just some small ripple effect else nothing amiss. The text is easily read no issue with the printed text at all. . There are two small 'rubs' on the covers which are not outstanding but blend in The four large folding color maps are present complete as issued. . . unknown

Lyautey served in various positions in Africa and Madagascar served as the Resident-Generale of Morocco from 1912-25 and briefly was Minister of War in 1917. Lyautey was well known as a homosexual and inspired one of Clemenceau's baser quips: "an admirable and courageous man who always had balls up to his ass. Elizabeth Hawkins Whitshed was a mountaineer and photographer of mountain scenery proving something of a pioneer in both fields. She was also a prolific traveller and writer publishing works under her three married names - Mrs. Fred Burnaby Mrs. Main and as here Mrs. Aubrey Le Blond. Her English translation of Lyautey's Tonkin letters was published by John Lane in 1932. Lyautey was a general in the French army and a senior colonial administrator serving in Indochina 1894-97 Madagascar 1897-1902 and later in several stints Morocco.
