1906HCA-5042Philadelphia PA: Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania 1906. 352 pp. purple cloth w/ gold lettering to spine & gold decoration to front board top edges gilt ; Book shows some fading to spine w/ fairly light wear to ends; similar wear to corners of boards a bit heavier to bottom corners w/ some worn spots to edges as well; front board shows a little fading to top 3/4" w/ slight fading along spine & bottom edge as well as a small water spot & a few scrapes & other blemishes; rear board shows slight fading to top 2" as well as a number of small scuffs or scrapes & a small spot worn through at fore edge; front free endpaper shows a small brown spot carried through from other side w/ creases to bottom corner & a few extremely short tears to fore edge - following page shows the same brown stain w/ the same creasing but lighter w/ binding cracking at gutter between this page and half-title; half-title has a faint version of the brown spot & has the limitation number penciled in under the text; rear interior hinge beginning to crack; tissue guard for one plate was folded & is now creased / Label glued to front pastedown states: "With the fraternal compliments of the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania F. & A. M. George W. Kendrick Jr. Grand Master November A. D. 1906 A. L. 5906." Born in Magyargencs, Hungary, Katz studied at various yeshivot and at the university of Frankfurt. From 1936 to 1950 he taught at religious schools and the Mizrachi Teachers Seminary in Jerusalem. From 1950 he taught at the Hebrew University, becoming professor of Jewish social and educational history in 1962. In 1969 he was appointed rector of the Hebrew University. Katzs published works include Toledot Yisrael ve-he-Ammim; Maso-ret u-Mashber; Exclusiveness and Tolerance; Freemasons and Jews; Emancipation and Assimilation: Studies in Modern Jewish History; Out of the Ghetto: The Social Background of Jewish Emancipation, 17701870; Toward Modernity: The European Jewish Models. His work is significant for the understanding of the intricate relationships between Jews and gentiles and offers insights into Jewish sociology in medieval and modern times. For his studies he utilized rabbinical sources which had been usually unexplored for historical-sociological research.
