The owner was probably: Henry Clay Pleasants (1833-1880) was a Pottsville, PA coal mining engineer and a brigadier general in the Union Army during the Civil War. He is best known for organizing the building of an underground tunnel filled with explosives under the Confederate lines outside Petersburg, Virginia, resulting in the Battle of the Crater on July 30, 1864, an opportunity for Union troops to break the defense of Petersburg. With 2pp publisher's advertisement bound in at end. First appearance of a standard work in the early resurgence of 'Gothic'. Dedicated to the Oxford Society, Barr's study is eminently practical and very well organised by architectural feature. As usual with Parker's publications, the plates and illustrations (which include a number by Jewitt) are both delightful and detailed. Uncommon in this condition.
