Pointing out the manifest absurdities contradictions and falsehoods of the Awful Disclosures of Maria Monk 1836 including sworn documentary evidence and a biographical sketch of Maria Monk. Maria Monks narrative is one of the most famous examples of nineteenth century American anti-Catholic propaganda. The mysterious Maria Monk found ready help and encouragement in the publication of her charges by men associated with the American nativist movement the Rev. George Bourne and the Rev. W.C.Brownlee. Within a few years of the appearance of her slanderous and scandalous disclosures of the wicked activities engaged in at the Hotel Dieu nunnery in Montreal from where she claimed to have just escaped Maria Monk had slipped back into obscurity. She died on Welfare Island where she was imprisoned on charges of petty thievery and immorality. For an interesting account of the Maria Monk controversy see Ralph Thompsons article The Maria Monk Affair in The Colophon Part Seventeen. TPL 7395. Lande 1992. Gagnon II 86. 1714AQ15134London: Printed and Sold by J. Roberts 1714. 21pp 1. Without half-title. Recent red half-morocco red cloth boards lettered in gilt T.E.G. A trifle rubbed and marked. Marbled endpapers internally clean and crisp. The sole edition of an anonymous elegiac satirical epitaph upon army officer and politician John 1st Duke of Marlborough who contrary to the title survived until 1722 and indeed would certainly not have been interred at Antwerp given the allied offensive against the city during the recently concluded War of Spanish Succession. The prefatory remarks addressed to the publisher are signed by Thomas Johnson presumably the pseudonym of the unknown author. In those same remarks our author claims membership of the apparently fictional Marlborough Club who desired that he carry out this translation so that 'our own People may see the just Esteem which Foreigners have for the Memory of that Great MAN' a highly ironic proclamation that informs the intention of the epitaph as a whole. ESTC locates only copies at only three locations in the UK BL Cambridge Trinity and Oxford and ten in the United States Duke Folger Illinois Indiana Kansas Minnesota Missouri Newberry North Caroline and Texas. 1831AQ22321London: J. Tabby 1831. Single bifolium. 2pp. A trifle creased to extremities some marking to gutter split at head. The highlight of this double-page playbill is the detailed 'order of scenery' included for the popular Regency hippodrama Timour the Tartar by Matthew Gregory 'Monk' Lewis' 1775-1818 Gothic novelist and dramatist. Timour which debuted at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in late April or early May 1811 is believed to be the first play expressly written to feature horses. This performance featured horses from Cooke's Circus which appeared in several different performances at the Theatre Royal in May 1831 and their involvement in three scenes is explicitly detailed here. .
