INSCRIBED in ink in the 1960s by THREE OF THE FILM'S FOUR STARS Douglas Fairbanks Jr. Neil Hamilton and Frank McHugh on both the front free endpaper and its verso. This copy bears the bookplate of Art Ronnie a noted studio publicist who later became a TV critic for the Los Angeles Herald-Examiner. Inscribed photoplays are exceedingly rare. Possibly a unique opportunity for the collector. DAWN PATROL the story of a doomed squadron of wartime aviators was remade several times. Struck by photographer Jim Marshall circa 1990s with his stamp and holograph identification number on the verso. <br/><br/>As a photographer for both record labels and magazines such as "Rolling Stone" Jim Marshall was one of the most prolific and influential chronicles of rock music during the 1960s and 1970s. Among his most iconic photographs are images of Jimi Hendrix setting his guitar on fire at Monterey Pop Johnny Cash performing at San Quentin and The Beatles backstage at their final live concert at Candlestick Park. Collection of five vintage oversize borderless photographs and two contact sheets with 59 images of the Thelonious Monk Quartet in performance at the La Maison de l'ORTF Office de Radiodiffusion-Television Francaise in Paris on February 23 1964. Photographs with the stamp of photographer Alain Dessalles on the verso.<br/><br/>The quartet here includes saxophonist Charlie Rouse bassist Butch Warren and drummer Ben Riley. They would also back Monk on his 1964 album It's Monk's Time the tracks for which were recorded at in January February and March one of five albums Monk would release that year. <br/><br/>According to Robin Kelly's Thelonious Monk: The Life and Times of an American Original the quartet was in the midst of a 17-stop tour through Europe when these photographs were taken. The images capture the legendary pianist at the height of his creative powers and three days later on February 28 1964 Monk became just the fourth jazz musician to be featured on the cover of Time magazine. <br/><br/>Photographs 8 x 12 inches contact sheets 9 x 12 inches. Archive of 68 vernacular photographs housed in a contemporary photo album each photo with descriptions in silver holograph ink just below it and distributed in three sections as follows: 1 34 photos taken on the set of "The Dawn Patrol" Howard Hawks 1930 an aviation drama set during World War I. Included are shots of planes in flight and several others of star Douglas Fairbanks Jr. With holograph annotations to the album pages identifying most of the photographs; 2 16 vernacular photographs taken on the set of the pre-Code film "The Life of the Party" Roy Del Ruth 1930 and 18 vernacular photographs of the sinking of the RMS Tahiti off cost of Rarotonga in the Cook Islands on August 16-17 1930 taken from the nearby SS Ventura.<br/><br/>The front cover of the photo album identifies the photographer as J.N. Boucher and he appears four times in the album twice dressed as a pilot in "The Dawn Patrol" section and twice in "The Life of the Party" section in one standing in front of a Vitaphone truck along with a man identified as Dolph Thomas who worked as an uncredited sound engineer on the film.<br/><br/>Photographs variously sized generally between 3.5 x 2.5 and 5.25 x 3.25 inches Very Good plus.
