Limp boards ca. 1651 title in ink on spine minor worm traces inside both covers light wear and soiling minor repairs to spine. Portion of front free endpaper torn away evidence of stamp removal from lower margin of final leaf minor foxing and toning but a very good uncut copy.</p> <p> First Edition. In his experiments with live dogs Pecquet discovered the thoracic duct and chyle reservoir receptaculum chylii which had been sought after since Aselli's discovery of the chyliferous vessels lacteals in dogs in 1627. Pecquet correctly described the termination of the chyliferous vessels Aselli's "lacteal veins" in the chyle reservoir refuting the erroneous notion that the vessels ended in the liver; he also described the junction of the thoracic duct at the union of the jugular and subclavical veins. First published at Paris in 1651 this edition has the important 'De thoracicis lacteis dissertatio' added. Written against Jean Riolan the dissertatio is dedicated to Thomas Bartholin who on the basis of Pecquet's discoveries was able to confirm and extend them to cover the entire lymphatic system. "Pecquet. engaged not in the "mute and frozen science" of cadaver anatomy but in anatomia animata on dogs cattle pigs and sheep. Using a dog that was digesting he showed the following: 1. If the heart has been resected pressure on the mesenteric root causes the chyle to spurt into the superior vena cava. 2. The chyle is directed toward the subclavian veins by two paravertebral canals that swell when their distal extremities are ligatured. 3. The origin of the ascending chyliferous ducts is situated in a prevertebral and subdiaphragmatic ampulla. 4. The posterior part of Aselli's pancreas is composed of lymphatic ganglia. 5. No mesenteric chyliferous vessel goes to the liver. and the interior vena cava incised above the liver reveals no trace of chyle. The human thoracic duct was rediscovered by Thomas Bartholin Rudbeck and Gayant. With Perrault and Gayant Pecquet eventually observed the communications of the human thoracic duct with the lumbar veins. Pecquet's discovery was received with great interest and provoked sharp debate particularly with Riolan" DSB. Besides the newly added dissertatio this edition contains further treatises supporting Pecquet's findings and another elaborate refutation of Riolan. Ce livre est un pamphlet satirique des évènements en France et en Europe après la mort de Louis XIV. Les noms des protagonistes sont dissimulés par des noms orientaux. C'est dans cet ouvrage que l'on fait allusion pour la première fois à l'énigme du ”masque de fer”. Barbier possédait un exemplaire de ce livre avec la note manuscrite: ”Monsieur Pecquet commis au bureau des affaires étrangères est l'auteur de cet ouvrage, et a été mis à la Bastille en punition”. Une lettre trouvée dans les papiers de Mme du Hausset femme de chambre de Mme de Pompadour, mentionne que les mémoires secrets sont de Mme de Vieux-Maisons, il est probable qu'elle en a confié la publication à Pecquet. # PHOTOS visibles sur www.latourinfernal.com

Bien des personnages, aujourd'hui fort obscurs, figurent dans ces « Mémoires » que le gouvernement de la Restauration crut devoir encore faire saisir et mettre à l'index. (Drujon).
