März 1753 in Calais; gestorben 24. Juli 1835 in La Celle-Saint-Cloud war ein französischer Schriftsteller. . Nach Jahren entdeckte er dass sein Vater ihn enterbt hatte und begann unter dem Pseudonym Pigault-Lebrun Theaterstücke zu schreiben. Der erste Erfolg stellte sich 1789 mit 'Le Pessimiste' ein mit dem er auf das seinerseits erfolgreiche Stück 'L'Optimiste' von Jean-François Collin d'Harleville reagierte. Ein Jahr später kritisierte er in 'Charles et Caroline' die Verhältnisse im Ancien Régime. Ab 1794 veröffentlichte er zahlreiche Romane die zum Teil auch ins Deutsche übersetzt wurden. Seine gesammelten Werke erschienen von 1822 bis 1824 in 20 Bänden. Zahlreiche seiner Werke wurden durch die Glaubenskongregation auf den Index gesetzt. Pigault-Lebrun gehört zu den französischen Begründern der Unterhaltungs- und Trivialliteratur. Einige seiner Werke erlebten moderne Ausgaben darunter der erotische Roman 'L'enfant du bordel' der gleich zweimal ins Deutsche übersetzt wurde." A warm letter of good length addressed to 'mon cher Camarade'. The handwriting is difficult. He speaks of 'la prolongation de votre Exil' 'ma philosophie Epicurienne' 'de Dames et de demoiselles de cette ville' and of health 'de tête de dents de l'Estomac de gorge coliques &c'. ENGRAVING: Oval portrait captioned at foot 'Pigault le Brun'. Head and shoulders in profile against a dark background with white cravat waistcoat and high-collared Restoration coat. captioned at foot in copperplate: 'Pigault le Brun'. No publication details. "Citateur par Pigault." Le Brun Doubts of Infidels: Embodying Thirty Important Questions to the Clergy. Also Forty Close Questions to the Doctors of Divinity. Charles-Antoine-Guillaume Pigault-Lebrun Pigault de l'Espinoy was a French novelist and playwright. He was born at Calais; he is said to have traced his pedigree on the mother's side to Eustache de St Pierre. His youth was stormy. He twice carried off young ladies of some position and was in consequence twice imprisoned by lettre de cachet. The first a Miss Crawford the daughter of an English merchant whose office Pigault had entered died almost immediately after her elopement; the second Mlle de Salens he married. He became a soldier in the Queen's Guards then a very unsuccessful actor and a teacher of French. At the breaking out of the great war he re-enlisted and fought at Valmy. He wrote more than twenty plays and a large number of novels the first of which appeared in 1787. In his old age he took to graver work and executed an abridgement of French history in eight volumes besides some other work. His "Oeuvres completes" were published in twenty volumes between 1822 and 1824 but much of his work is subsequent to this collection. The style of Pigault's novels is insignificant and their morality very far from severe. As almost the father of a kind of literature which later developed enormously Pigault-Lebrun deserves a certain place in literary history. Among the most celebrated of his novels may be mentioned "L'Enfant du Carnaval" 1792 and "Angelique et Jeanneton de la place Maubert" 1799. His "Citateur" 2 vols. 1803 a collection of quotations against Christianity was forbidden and yet several times reprinted. BANNED BOOK. Width: 5.25" Height: 7.75". Bound in blind-stamped brown cloth with gilt lettering to spine. Book shows light soiling to covers. Binding is firm. Front flyleaf bears name of previous owner and date August 1876 in pencil Charles Wolcott Brookes San Francisco. Pages display light pencil marginalia sometimes of a rather piquant nature. Two blank pages at rear of volume are annotated in pencil.
