Review of book tipped in. Dustjacket has faint creasing; 0.85 x 9.32 x 6.32 Inches; 240 pages; Theseus is celebrated as the greatest of Athenian heroes. This work explores what he meant to the Athenians at the height of their city-state in the fifth century B. C. Assembling material that has been scattered in scholarly works, Henry Walker examines the evidence for the development of themyth and cult of Theseus in the archaic age. He then looks to major works of classical literature in which Theseus figures, exploring the contradictions between the archaic, primitive side of his character and his refurbished image as the patron of democracy. His ambiguous nature as outsider, flouting accepted standards of behavior, while at the same time being a hero-king and a representative of higher ideals, is analyzed through his representations in the work of Bacchylides, Euripides, and Sophocles. This is the only work of scholarship that examines the literary representation ofTheseus so thoroughly. It brings to life a literary character whose virtues, flaws, and contradictions belong in no less a degree to his creators, the people of Athens.

With an Excursus on the Ritual Forms Preserved in Greek Tragedy By Gilbert Murray and a Chapter on the Origin of the Olympic Games By F. M. Cornford. Drawing upon a range of disciplines including anthropology, classical studies, archaeology and psychology, Jane Ellen Harrison's Themis pieced together the origins of early Greek religion. One of 'Britain's first female professional 'career academics'...and the ideas espoused on Greek rituals and myths in Themis remain influential today. This revolutionary study traces Themis back through history, as a matriarchal tribal goddess. Addressing areas including magic, sacrifice and the origin of the Olympic games, Harrison applies archaeological discoveries to the interpretation of Greek religion. Including a detailed preface and explanatory notes, this revised second edition of 1927 is described by Harrison as 'addressed not so much to the specialist as to the thinker generally'. xxv.559p. Mythology is common to all cultures, and every attempt to trace the pattern of human development has to take it into account. It is the expression of humanity's early efforts to find an explanation for the world they lived in, for the forces that governed their life--and their need to ascribe to them the good or evil things that befell them. When man gave names to these forces he started on the path that led to the formalizing of belief, and so to religion...Here is the world's mythology presented in a highly attractive form, introduced by Jacquetta Hawkes, the celebrated anthropologist and archaeologist, and illustrated with reproductions of paintings, sculptures, textiles and books. This is an ideal introduction to a fascinating world which contains the explanation of so much of man's behavior, his fears, his superstitions and taboos, many of which, while seeming recent in time, are as old as man himself. 350p.ills.
