MARIA GARCIA MALIBRAND was the wunderkind child of Manuel Garcia himself the operatic star who created the role of Count Almaviva in Mazzini's "The Barber of Seville". He trained his two daughters as operatic singers. Maria 1808-1836 became the most famous singer of her time a living legend after she debuted in the role of Rosina in "Barber". Her father brought his family troupe to New York City where they performed the first Italian opera in NYC. Rossini Donizetti Chopin Mendelssohn and Liszt were strong supporters. Rossini considered Malibran a genius among singers he knew. Teatro Malibran in Venice is named for her after she appeared there in 1835. The Cuban-born author the Countess de Merlin was young beautiful rich talented and connected. A musician writer and wit her salon in Paris was very popular and promoted the career of Balzac. Only recently has the author Condesa de Merlin been appreciated as pivotal both to the Cuban nationalist tradition and to 19th Century Spanish-American literature. She was arguably the first woman writer in Cuban literary history to articulate a sense of national identity as well as being Cuba's first female historian - Adriana Mendez Rodenas. A second and third memoir of Malibran appears in vol. 2 along with selections from her correspondence anecdotes and finishes with a set of Italian sonnets and odes addressed to Madame Malibran.
