The first few leaves are slightly darkened and lightly foxed. Good.</p><p>First edition. Large octavo 1939 and 1949 and octavo the other six volumes ranging from 60 to 110 pages with illustrations plus plates in the pre-war years and 1949. Overlapping black card covers printed in red and yellow 1935-48 and flush-cut three-colour wrappers 1949; minimal signs of age and use with a few minor blemishes 1935: front cover creased foot of the front joint a little split with trifling loss to the ends of the spine and rear top corner; 1938: head of the front joint split; 1946: covers rubbed at the extremities; overall in excellent condition. 'Phoenix' supplanted 'The Adelaide University Magazine'; in turn it was supplanted by 'Angry Penguins' during the war years. The post-war issues generally do not compare with those from the 1930s which contain illustrations often linocuts or woodcuts by Dorrit Black John Dowie May Voke and Rex Wood and literary contributions by Max Harris Flexmore Hudson Rex Ingamells Geraldine Jay Charles Jury Donald Kerr and Paul Pfeiffer among others. The issue for 1949 is the post-war stand-out with contributions by Andrew Abbie Brian Elliott Max Harris Charles Jury Hal Porter Orde Poynton Thorburn Brailsford Robertson and Geoff Wilson assorted artwork including the front cover. 8 items. Original full red morocco ornately stamped in blind and gilt; 8vo; 31 manuscript pages including an illustrated short story landscapes in pencil Havana the Hudson River harbor of St. Thomas Martinique and 3 colored-pencil cartoons of American Indians these seemingly contributed by a child. Just a little scuffed along joints and edges of boards else fine. Likely the work of Horace Richardson the title-page and "publication information" see above states that this unique item was "copied" by him and one of the drawings most of which are clearly by the same artist is initialed "H. R." The book does indeed seem to correspond at least in part with a journey on the Winfield Scott a sidewheel steamer that transported cargo and passengers from San Francisco and Panama during the California Gold Rush -- then sank in December of 1853. The landscapes are nicely accomplished: "Yosemite Falls from Black's Hotel" signed "H.R." "Highland Park Hotel Aiken S.C." "Vineyard Haven" "View from the Window in our Parlor in the Hotel El Telegrafo Havana 1872" "View from my Window at the West Point Hotel Looking up the Hudson 1872" and "Fort de France Martinique from the Sea." Opens with a weird little short story in which the malefactor Joseph Shed spends his entire life stealing stockings even dirty ones punishment be damned. <br/><br/> hardcover

Illustrations information and pricing for saddles chaps boots hats gloves lariats stirrups reins etc. Newton Porter was born in St. Louis Missouri and was left an orphan by the American Civil War. He learned to build saddles from a St. Louis Saddlery. William Newton Porter moved from Taylor Texas to Phoenix Arizona and established the N. Porter Saddle & Harness Company in 1895. The saddlery remained family owned and operated until the closing of the business in the 1960s. He founded the N. Porter Saddle and Harness Company in Taylor Texas in 1875. For the next 90-years the N. Porter Company established a reputation for building the finest saddles in the West. Newton established the N. Porter Saddle and Harness Company in Phoenix Arizona in 1895. The Porter saddles were widely known throughout the West. The famous Western novelist Zane Grey's personal favorite saddle was his Newton Porter. Light soiling and with light wear to the extremities and spine. Very good. Also includes an unused order form and envelop for the company as well as a 3-page mimeographed sheets made up of a cover letter followed by two pages of price listings for the Karl's of Seattle Company. The letter explains how to order saddles belts blankets etc. Prices for silver mounted saddles bridles plain and flower stamped saddles plate buckles etc. Karl’s of Seattle was owned by Karl L. Raab who employed one of the premier silversmiths on the west coast Don Ellis to manufacture mountings for their coveted line of parade saddles. All three sheet very good plus. Thomas Harper of Redditch England advertises and markets his Phoenix Needle Works by giving away this sample packet of his needles. The double flap folder gives the appearance of a chromolithographic trade card but opens to reveal the sample here no longer present. An interior scene depicting two well-dressed women conversing in a comfortable parlor is captioned with their dialogue promoting Harper’s products.</p> unknown
