Overlapping black card covers printed in red and yellow 1935-48 and flush-cut three-colour wrappers 1949; minimal signs of age and use with a few minor blemishes 1935: front cover creased foot of the front joint a little split with trifling loss to the ends of the spine and rear top corner; 1938: head of the front joint split; 1946: covers rubbed at the extremities; overall in excellent condition. 'Phoenix' supplanted 'The Adelaide University Magazine'; in turn it was supplanted by 'Angry Penguins' during the war years. The post-war issues generally do not compare with those from the 1930s which contain illustrations often linocuts or woodcuts by Dorrit Black John Dowie May Voke and Rex Wood and literary contributions by Max Harris Flexmore Hudson Rex Ingamells Geraldine Jay Charles Jury Donald Kerr and Paul Pfeiffer among others. The issue for 1949 is the post-war stand-out with contributions by Andrew Abbie Brian Elliott Max Harris Charles Jury Hal Porter Orde Poynton Thorburn Brailsford Robertson and Geoff Wilson assorted artwork including the front cover. 8 items. Hardcover bound in brown cloth titled with a vignette in gilt on the spine and a larger gilt illustration within blind-stamped floral decorations on front cover. The head and tail of the book's spine are heavily chipped and the top edge of the front cover and the spine are faded. 274 pages & 14 pages of publisher's ads illustrated with a frontispiece. The first few leaves are slightly darkened and lightly foxed. Good.</p><p>First edition. BAL 4650.</p><p>The work contains Derby's pieces as "Professor John Phoenixiana" and "Squibob" poking fun at such topics as military surveyors and explorers; contemporary travel accounts of the Mission Dolores Benecia Sonoma San Francisco and San Diego; literary societies and women's clubs; astronomy; and Army life.</p><p>Henry Morton's copy signed by him on front endpaper. The army lieutenant George Horatio Derby 1823-1861 wrote popular sketches and burlesques under the pseudonym John Phoenix or John P. Squibob. After graduating from West Point in 1846 he joined the Army Corps of Topographical Engineers to fight in the Mexican-American War. In 1853 Derby relocated to San Diego. In his spare time there he wrote short sketches and burlesques for the San Francisco Herald California Pioneer and the San Diego Herald. Topics included military surveyors travel accounts and local women's clubs. He compiled his writings into the present publication which saw 11 editions in one year. Wikipedia. D. Derby 1832-61 a West Point classmate of Ulysses S. Grant and Army lieutenant best remembered as an early California humorist publishing newspaper sketches under the name "John Phoenix" nicknamed "Squibob." First published in London in 1855 and the U.S. in 1856 this edition features Kemble's delightful illustrations. Phoenix specialized in cutting the local San Francisco gentry and their ways down to size -- some sample chapters convey his style: "Official Report of Professor John Phoenix A.M."
