Nonauthorial Christmas 1903 gift inscription on front flyleaf; spine ever-so-faintly toned. Exceptionally tight and handsome first of this edition. Phoenix was the pseudonym of George H. Derby 1832-61 a West Point classmate of Ulysses S. Grant and Army lieutenant best remembered as an early California humorist publishing newspaper sketches under the name "John Phoenix" nicknamed "Squibob." First published in London in 1855 and the U.S. in 1856 this edition features Kemble's delightful illustrations. Phoenix specialized in cutting the local San Francisco gentry and their ways down to size -- some sample chapters convey his style: "Official Report of Professor John Phoenix A.M." Overlapping black card covers printed in red and yellow 1935-48 and flush-cut three-colour wrappers 1949; minimal signs of age and use with a few minor blemishes 1935: front cover creased foot of the front joint a little split with trifling loss to the ends of the spine and rear top corner; 1938: head of the front joint split; 1946: covers rubbed at the extremities; overall in excellent condition. 'Phoenix' supplanted 'The Adelaide University Magazine'; in turn it was supplanted by 'Angry Penguins' during the war years. The post-war issues generally do not compare with those from the 1930s which contain illustrations often linocuts or woodcuts by Dorrit Black John Dowie May Voke and Rex Wood and literary contributions by Max Harris Flexmore Hudson Rex Ingamells Geraldine Jay Charles Jury Donald Kerr and Paul Pfeiffer among others. The issue for 1949 is the post-war stand-out with contributions by Andrew Abbie Brian Elliott Max Harris Charles Jury Hal Porter Orde Poynton Thorburn Brailsford Robertson and Geoff Wilson assorted artwork including the front cover. 8 items. Edges a bit spotted bookplate ghosts and "Poetry Room" stamped on each wrapper else very good. Edited by Harry Chambers. Published initially beginning in 1959 from Liverpool through a transition in editorship and a 12th number in Winter 1964. Chambers reassumes editorship for this new series projected as a quarterly then as three issues per year. The first three issues have manuscript corrections to the frequency of publication as well as to the editorial address and distributors as it moved about and got established in its new series. It continued well into the next decade under the auspices of the North West Arts Association. The first number is a special "Arts in Ulster" number and contributors throughout include Heaney Mahon Longley Montague Redgrove et al. hardcover books

1921025218Phoenix: Phoenix Union High School 1921. Quarto. 196 pages. The growing student body now is involved not only in far more sporting events but producing plays. Page 88ff show the Department for Colored children where a class of thirty-four African American children are taught separately with three seniors graduating. James Benton signed under his photograph. There are several other autographs throughout. He is listed as member of the Latin club and playing basketball but this was probably restrict to other African Americans in his rather small class. The Arizona Republican of May 21 1921 proudly noted there were three "colored" graduating whereas the highest number in previous years was one.
