16264177Venice: Giovanni Antonio Giuliani 1626. 16mo 142 x 99 mm. Collation: A-G16 G16 blank removed. 222 pages. Double column small roman types. Large woodcut on title 20 small woodcuts in the text printed from four blocks two used once each the others repeated. Printing flaw A9v. A couple of tiny marginal tears slight creasing to leaves at end. 20th-century tree-marbled glazed paper over flexible pasteboards. Provenance: “Bagio†inscription on front pastedown; Ex fondatione Giorgii --- illegible ownership inscription on title.

Unrecorded edition of a popular verse account of the fall of Troy. Part of the “prehistory of the Italian romance epic†Everson the Trojan tale circulated in several versions during the late medieval period. Like the other Italian versions this anonymous poem in 20 cantos in ottava rima may have been loosely based on the 13th-century Latin prose narrative Historia Troiana by Guido delle Colonne. Both poems emphasize Rome’s Trojan lineage. The earliest recorded edition of this version dates to 1483 GW 12519 1 extant copy an inconvenient fact for a later attribution to the poet Jacopo di Carlo who was in fact the printer of the 1491 edition.

In the sixteenth century the educated classes enjoyed the tale which was sometimes even read in schools. The spread of literacy stimulated the production of cheaper chapbook editions like this one thriftily printed in very small types with repeated impressions of the woodblocks of battle scenes. The larger title cut printed from a worn block which is missing part of the border shows a small skirmish of soldiers in medieval armor.

Editions appeared throughout the 17th century mainly in Venice but also in Padua and Verona. Together ICCU and OCLC list thirteen 16th and 17th century editions from 1562 to 1671 NOT including this one. All are rare. This edition not in ICCU OCLC USTC etc. See Brunet 5: 964-5; Melzi Anonime e pseudonime 3: 177; J. E. 391970San Francisco 1980. Unbound. Near Fine. Collage paste-ups for seven flyers created and obtained from artist Eddie Troia for shows at The Temple aka The Temple Beautiful and The Geary Temple in San Francisco in 1979 and early 1980. Cut and paste elements on letter and legal sized sheets some with holograph text written with white out on overlays. Some elements with typical rippling from paste near fine.

A collection of paste-ups documenting punk shows at The Temple an old Synagogue near the Fillmore and the Jim Jones Temple which became a punk venue in 1979 but ceased having punk shows the following year. The building was damaged by the 1989 earthquake and was subsequently torn down. The mock-ups are for shows by quite a cross section of the punk avant-garde and industrial bands in SF at the time with shows by Impatient Youth Flamin' Groovies Alley Cats Suburban Lawns No Alternative Minimal Man The Offs Mutants X Subhumans Mondellos Roy Loney & The Phantom Movers Soul Rebels Dead Kennedys Phone Bill Zeroes Sleepers and B People.

Eddie Troia was a playwright artist and manager for Jane Dornbacker. His art is characterized by a sure use of confident holograph titles with well-chosen images from pop culture contrasted with a cleanness resulting from the skillful use of glassine overlay. Striking and beautiful artwork documenting a very important but short-lived venue of the era as well as a valuable look at the graphic techniques of flyer creation before the computer. It is getting more and more difficult to find original mock-ups from meaningful performances especially in a grouping. unknown
19410001680SITKA ALASKA AK HAVRE MONTANA USA. Very Good. 1941. On offer is a very interesting very bluntly written detailed World War II manuscript diary handwritten John C. Troy 39601846 from Havre Montana. Using a large 5½ x7 ½ x 1 ¼ premium "My Year in the Army" undated journal with his name and city gilt stamped on the cover Mr. Troy is a character and has quite some personality which he unabashedly shares with his diary. Using the free endpapers he sets the tone when he writes: "Sitka Alaska The home of many fishermen. It has four bars three whore houses three whiskey stores and three cafes. When it's the army's pay day one has a hard time in finding room in any of them." For the most part the book is about 90% diary but as it is undated he uses it as a 'catchall' too - names addresses autographs drawings maps poetry transcribed songs and much much more. He also peppers the narrative with little stickers much like small postcards all of the Sitka area. He writes as little as a paragraph sometimes many pages on a particular day. Beginning with "Here it is the army life and likes and dislikes of it." he starts on April 10th 1941 declaring the "largest hangover of my life" through to late April 1942 all the while in Naval Air Station Sitka. He writes on every facing page and then doubles back when he reaches the end creating a massive 300 pages in all. This is one of the most interesting manuscript relics of World War II we have ever had the pleasure of reading. Overall VG.; 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF JOHN C. Incisione a bulino mm 417x290. Bartsch, n. 209; Delaborde, p. 291, n. 43; Massari, p. 236, n. 1; Bertelà, n. 396.

1613Very Good to Near Fine Condition/None. CottonManufacturing Two Massive Bound Ledgers for Troy Cotton & Woolen Manufactory Fall River Massachusetts 1885-1887 1893-1897 16 x 11.5 inches 360 & 552pp.

Beautiful custom bound ledgers. Both in full leather; one with suede with beautiful stamping and gilt second full leather with intricate gilt stamping. Light rubbing and edge wear. Tight binding and clean interior. Great exemplars of late 19th century business ledgers bound by N.R. Earl. Very Good to Near Fine Condition.

I fully admit to having a soft spot for business ledgers and these two are some of the best we have handled. Not only are they beautiful but they also present a window into post-civil war northern manufacturing of an exclusive southern product--cotton.

The Troy Cotton & Woolen Manufactory Company was founded in 1813 in what Fall River is now Massachusetts. The town was known as Troy between 1804-1834 hence the name of the company. Located over the uppermost falls of the Quequechan River Troy Cotton was the second textile mill on the Quequechan. Fall River's geography and location with convenient access to waterpower and port facilities helped propel the city into one of the centers of American textile manufacturing.

These ledgers provide a unique window into the triangular structure of the cotton industry--i.e. the sourcing of raw cotton from slave-free southern plantations by northern textile mills and the eventual sale of resulting cloth to world markets. Before the Civil War cotton sugar and tobacco were the basis for a thriving American economy built on the backs of slave labor. By 1870 sharecroppers small farmers and plantation owners in the American South produced more cotton than the slave laborers had in 1860 a trend that lasted into the early 1900's.

The earliest ledger commencing June 1885 features a daily tally of all goods bought and sold by the Troy Cotton & Woolen Manufactory thru May 1887. Raw cotton is supplied by scores of suppliers and factors brokers working in major port cities Mobile and New Orleans plus many smaller cities as Dawson GA Corsican TX Charlotte NC Louisville KY Hillsboro TX etc. Additional products purchased by Troy Cotton includes spinners brooms lumber grain cards bagging paid labor new machinery printing supplies and much more.

The second ledger commencing October 1892 provides a full accounting of Troy Cotton & Woolen Manufactory thru June 1897. Ledger notations include stock balances real estate holdings cash on hand construction costs and additional P & L entries. Specific line-item expenditures include rent repairs interest gas oil brokerage fees and labor costs. Customers buying finished products were located in Boston Chicago Staten Island Philadelphia Baltimore Providence New York City Hartford etc.

The company operated until 1929 with their various buildings occupied by businesses including those in the garment industry. Troy Cotton & Woolen Manufactory buildings were demolished in the 1960s as part of urban renewal and to make way for Interstate 195.

A small grouping of laid in ephemera include 30 dividend receipts from 1874 three $500 stock shares 1924 1925 and 1935 a 1924 receipt for stock shares plus a 20-page 1909 mortgage deed of trust.

Extra shipping required. unknown
60219Paris: Creation S.F.I.P.E. 1943. Original large colour lithographic map of the world on Mercator's projection 68.5 x 151 cm. Old folds and closed tears professionally repaired retouched and laid onto linen. Rare. Much in the manner of Lucien Boucher showing French airways around the world the poster was produced at the height of WW2 after the surrender of France and the subsequent German invasion of the Vichy zone in November 1942. The global vision and expressive sub-title stand clearly in defiance of France's domestic woes. André Troy better known just as Troy this poster signed in the lithograph "TROY 43" was a French artist and illustrator who produced at least one poster for Air France in 1936 and illustrated two or three of their promotional brochures during the late 1940s and early 1950s. He also illustrated book covers and a number of movie posters during the 40s e.g. "Six petites filles en blanc" 1943 and "Un de nos avions n'est pas rentré" 1946 originally "One of our aircraft is missing" Michael Powell 1942.
