1998000480Bangkok: SDI 1998. Originally published in 1925 in a four-volume edition now virtually unobtainable this work by one of the foremost Asian scholars of the last century remains the most comprehensive treatise on Chinese Buddhist sculpture in any western language. In this monumental study Siren commences with a comprehensive introduction and survey of the genre. He then illustrates dates and describes over 900 examples in bronze stone and wood ranging in date from the fifth century Wei Dynasties through the Northern Qi Sui Tang and Song periods to the end of Chinese sculptural innovation in the fourteenth century Yuan Dynasty. Representative examples are included from all of the great collections of North America Europe and Japan as well as in situ examples from cave temples architectural ruins and imperial tombs in China. Many of the items illustrated appeared in print in this volume for the first time and a significant number of them have since been lost; it is also noteworthy that Siren's study was produced prior to the massive pollution of the genre by high quality fakes which has occurred in more recent years. This new edition of a classic study on Chinese art history has been produced in two volumes bringing together descriptions and related illustrations into the same volumes the original edition had these separated and employing digital technology to enhance and enlarge many of the original photographs. Total over 1000 pp. including 125 pp. introductory essay plate descriptions index and over 600 photographic plates illustrating some 900 objects. Both volumes are bound in handsome bonded leather; edition is limited to 999 sets only. Heavy and oversize book - may require additional postage. Limited second edition. Hardbound in slipcase. New. 31 x 22 cm. SDI Hardcover

1938145347London: The Chiswick Press 1938. Inscribed by the collector Limited edition number 294 of 750 copies inscribed by A. W. Bahr on the limitation page: "the 18th September 1958. To Marjorie Phelps Starr every good wishes for your gifted appreciation and understanding of the great Chinese pictorial art. With great hopes for your own personal expressions. Sincerely your well wishing friend O. W. Bahr Ridgefield Conn.". Born to a German civil servant in China the coal merchant Abel William Bahr 1877-1959 began to develop his interest in Chinese art in 1905 and started to build his collection which in breadth and scope came to have few equals among westerners. In 1908 he promoted the first exhibition of Chinese art in Shanghai. He moved to England in 1910 but continued to make trips to China and further developed his collection. Much of the Chinese artwork was purchased by the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1947 with other Bahr material now in museums and galleries across the world. This catalogue of Bahr's early Chinese Paintings is introduced by the Finnish-born Swedish art historian Osvald Sirén 1879-1966 one of the pioneers of Chinese art scholarship in the West. This volume accompanies his larger works including Chinese Sculpture from the Fifth to the Fourteenth Centuries 1925 The Imperial Palaces of Peking 1926 and the monumental seven-volume Chinese Painting 1956-58. The recipient of this copy Marjorie Phelps Starr was a native of Bahr's adopted Ridgefield home and though little is forthcoming about her life she made a large bequest to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York which the museum cites as contributing to the acquisition of many artworks. This copy is from the Garden collection of Haven O'More with his black morocco monogram book label to the front pastedown. One of the greatest book collectors of the latter part of the 20th century O'More's collection focused both on the finest specimens of printing and the great moments in the development of literature and thought. Folio. With 25 mounted colour plates. Original black cloth spine and front cover lettered in gilt. With the black card slipcase. A fine copy. Slipcase somewhat worn with tape repair but all holding. hardcover

FIRST & ONLY LIMITED EDITION OF 750 NUMBERED COPIES This an important and scholarly Bahr collection catalogue. It is an essential and scarce reference source. This work covers 25 fine examples of the greatest Chinese paintings found in the world-famous Bahr Collection. Each item is carefully described and annotated by the celebrated art-historian and Sinologist Osvald Siren. ISSUED IN A LIMITED NUMBERED EDITION OF ONLY 750 COPIES. This work was issued in a FIRST and ONLY single LIMITED EDITION OF 750 NUMBERED COPIES each of which were hand numbered in pen. The publisher printed a few "over-runs" or extra copies to insure at least 750 pristine & flawless complete copies. There few extra and flawless copies were then bound up in the identical cloth without hand numbering they are called "out of sequence." They were distributed to the author & publisher for presentation to personal friends. They retain the same value as the other copies. There was a very small number of the "over-runs" issued for this purpose that occasionally reach the market. Because the book was published in a very small edition it has always been hard to find. Printed in a Deluxe edition on heavy deckle-edge paper gold stamped titles hand numbered or "out-of-sequence" with Siren's lucid introductory essay each plate has a tissue guard protecting it as usual there are some with wrinkles by and large nice condition.
