VI 73 3 blank; 3 1 blank; 3 1 blank pp. First edition in French of a work on the imperial palaces of Beijing by the Finnish-born Swedish art historian and professor Osvald Sirén 1879-1966. Besides the Italian Renaissance Sirén was very interested in Chinese art and culture and wrote various books on the subject mostly in English. The photographs were all taken by Sirén himself and he wrote an accompanying 40-page introduction on the so-called "Forbidden City" with two small chapters on the seaside and summer palaces. The collotypes show mostly palaces some from several angles but also monuments pavilions statues interiors and gardens with short descriptions in both French and English. They give a unique view of the city in the early 20th century since some of the buildings have vanished or are now settled in completely different surroundings.With the bookplate of W.A.S. Swets 1902-1992 in each volume. Minor foxing throughout original paper wrappers heavily discoloured. Overall a good copy wholly untrimmed and with the bolts unopened.l R. This is a scarce set of 40 large plates of Chinese paintings selected from American collections by Osvald Siren. Large folio size. Text in French. This large folio consists of an outer wrap of heavy brown/tan card with wear and tears to card wrappers but clean inside and with NO RESTORATION OR REPAIRS TO THE WRAPPERS. A VG copy of the first part of 5 parts of the famous Siren study on Chinese paintings in American collections Annales du Musee Guimet - Bibliotheque d'Art Nouvelle Serie II. There are 41 pages of text that provide an introduction together with detailed descriptions of the plates all printed on loose 4 page sections. This is followed by 40 full-page prints with none of the usual heavy foxing/wear usually encountered. The plates are all in VG or better condition. Text in French. Osvald Siren 1879-1966 was a renowned Finnish-Swedish art historian and one of the early Western scholars of Chinese art. He made 4 major travels to East Asia between 1918 and 1935. NB: this set is in the original wrappers and has not been rebound. Photographs/scans available upon request. unknown

This is the first four volumes of a five volume set. 22 page introduction in volume 1 discusses the various collections from which these images come. The paintings are from a span of nearly a thousand years and are arranged chronologically. In each section the plates are described with an attribution a short physical description and any notable comments on the work's history aesthetics or provenance.
