1626182961London: Francis Williams 1626. A remarkable piece of colonial propaganda and one of the earliest books concerned with America First edition published to promote Vaughan's Newfoundland settlement. This fanciful work "draws a parallel between the mission conducted by Jason and his fellow Argonauts to win the golden fleece and the opportunities offered to colonists especially Orpheus junior's 'countreymen of Wales' in Newfoundland" ODNB. William Vaughan 1577-1641 was concerned about the poor economic conditions in Wales and became interested in colonization as a means of improving standards of living. In 1616 he purchased a portion of the Avalon Peninsula and the following year dispatched a few ill-prepared colonists. In honour of its Welsh origin the colony was named Cambriol. Hiring the English mariner Richard Whitbourne in 1618 and as governor Vaughan hoped to attract more colonists: "Whitbourne did his best to reorganize the colony by moving it to a better location but at the same time had to deal with a piratical attack on one of his ships from deserters of the Guiana fleet of Sir Walter Raleigh" Howgego. The colony collapsed in 1619. His attempts to promote it continued throughout the 1620s. Wishing "to obtain more settlers he wrote this allegory in praise of his colony in which truth and fiction are mixed to such an extent that the reader of the present day can hardly separate the one from the other" Church. The map of Newfoundland by Captain John Mason here in facsimile is very rarely found with the book. Small quarto 180 x 134 mm in 3 parts pp. 28 150 106 96 with pagination errors as issued. Very Good brittle and toned with age a little chipped along edges. Ink notation of former owner likely collector Tom Benson on rear wrap. 1960209661960. Afro-Latino Film Jean-Michel Basquiat Black Orpheus. Lopert Films 1960. Archive of 3 original lobby cards for the American release of the retelling of Orpheus set in the slums of Rio de Janeiro featuring an all-Black cast and introducing bossa nova to the world it's impressionistic style lead the film to gain international fame as an art house classic. Black Orpheus was cited by as one of his early musical influencesMeasures 11" x 14". Prints 60/74. Heavily illustrated in colour and monochrome purple and greyscale. Based on the play Orfeu da Conceição by the Brazilian writer Vinicius de Moraes and retold by French filmmaker Marcel Camus the 1959 film won multiple awards for it's lush visuals the then unique and little known Brazilian music score and portrayal of Afro-Brazilian characters. The film went on to win an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film a Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film and the highest award of the Palme d'Or for the Cannes Film Festival. Black Orpheus included large aspects of local flavour through Carnival the Brazilian folk religion Candomblé and bossa nova. Each lobby card features a painted still from the film such as the two main love interests gazing at each other through prison bars a Carnival celebration and a large samba scene. The lobby cards promote the film as "Passionate!" "Exotic!" and "Sensuous!" Though the film reached critical acclaim amongst foreigners it was regarded amongst Brazilians and later critics as only touching on the more stereotypical aspects of Brazilian culture. Nonetheless it's impact created interest in Brazilian culture and film. The film soundtrack by Antônio Carlos Jobim whose song "A felicidade" opens the film and Luiz Bonfá whose "Manhã de Carnaval" and "Samba de Orfeu" have become classics of bossa nova. Overall very good condition very minor edge wear and tiny staining to the margins . Barack Obama notes in his memoir Dreams from My Father that it was his mother's favorite film. unknown
