In-8 (cm. 26), brossura illustrata, con alette, pp. 263, (1), con illustrazioni soprattutto a colori nel testo. In buono stato di conservazione (good copy). Se dovessimo risalire alle origini di quella straordinaria passione per lo sport e per l'agonismo così prorompente nell'uomo moderno, non potremmo che individuarle in una grande civiltà progenitrice: l'antica Grecia. L'immagine dell'atleta greco impersona il principio della kalokagathia (il "bello e buono") sul quale si fonda non solo la competizione sportiva, bensì tutto lo spirito vitale di un'intera società. Se poi volessimo considerarlo in termini culturali e meno settoriali, converremmo sul punto che si tratta semplicemente di un principio fondante del nostro modo di essere. Kalokagathia rispecchia un ideale dell'antica Grecia e, più in generale, della civiltà occidentale, e significa sostanzialmente il formarsi forte, resistente e armonioso del corpo in sintonia con l'educazione morale, intellettuale e sociale del giovane. Atleta, allora, non solo per qualità fisiche, ma anche morali e intellettuali. Xilografia in chiaroscuro stampata in marrone, grigio e marrone chiaro. misure: mm 855 x 613 Incisore italiano, apprese l'arte xilografica dal padre Cristoforo originario di Norimberga ma attivo a Bologna. Si perfeziona nel disegno presso la Scuola di Guido Reni e si farà sensibile traduttore di molte sue opere. La sua produzione si caratterizza sia per una eleganza contenuta e raffinata sia, nei chiaroscuri, per il complesso impiego di più tavole. Predilige toni sobri (per lo più blu-grigio, verde e rossastro-bruno). Caratteristico, e peraltro non privo d'efficacia, è l'intaglio a tratti larghi e incrociati. Rara e straordinaria composizione realizzata su quattro fogli giuntati, ognuno stampato con tre lastre. E' considerata "per dimensione e complessità, il più ambizioso progetto di collaborazione" fra Coriolano e Reni. Come ricorda N. Takahatake il presente stato è conosciuto in solo due altri esemplari, uno a Londra presso il British Museum (W5.31) e una Cambridge Massachusetts presso il Fog Art Museum (1985.52.2072). Il presente esemplare è tuttavia un'ulteriore variante poiché non riporta la data 1647 nello stemma in alto a destra. Il soggetto è di traduzione da un dipinto di Guido Reni del quale si conoscono tre versioni, la seconda datata 1638 è servita come modello a Coriolano. Si conservano inoltre almeno tre disegni preparatori (Vienna, Albertina; Firenze, Uffizi n 12488, Londra Royal Collection n 3461). L'impeto, la rabbia e la dinamicità invadono la composizione: Zeus in alto al centro fa capolino dalle nudi, seduto su un'aquila stringe fra le mani fasci di fulmini, da una alta rupe i giganti dai corpi plastici e scultorei cadono a terra inermi dopo aver di scalare la montagna per raggiungere gli dei (Ovidio, Metamorfosi). Il tratto largo e continuo, il gioco dei chiaroscuri rende maestosa e intensa la scena. Iscrizioni in lastra in alto a destra entro uno stemma: Victoriam/iovis/arces gigantum/superimpositis montibus/fabricatas/fulmine deijcientis/Guido Rhenus/Iterun auxit/Barthol. Coriolanus/Eq/Incidit, & interum/evulgavit, a sinistra: TERRA PARENS/Quondam celestibus/Invida regnis./Calud Gigantoni; in basso a sinistra: G. R. In./Barthol. Coriolanus Eques/Sculp. es Form. Bonon./1641. La composizione, secondo la critica, ha una complicata storia di varianti e pubblicazioni successive. Si conoscono due versioni, A e B, riconoscibili per la presenza della dedica e dello stemma al Duca di Modena nei due fogli superiori e per l'aggiunta di due giganti e delle teste delle allegorie dei venti. Si conoscono varianti e stati, riconoscibili per il numero di tavole impiegate, la presenza della data 1647 apportata tramite timbro in alto a destra e la forma dello stemma dei Coriolano. Impressione stampata con tre lastre per ogni foglio, nella versione B con aggiunti due giganti fra le rocce e due teste personificazione dei venti, lo stemma nobiliare di Coriolano in basso a destra e con lo stemma e la Dedica al duca di Modena in alto sostituiti da altre iscrizioni da un liuto e da un clarinetto. Stato II/III, con lo stemma dei Coriolano in basso a destra modificato nella forma e dimensione, non tocca per esempio la linea di contorno inferiore, e con inchiostro grigio applicato a mano per nascondere i segni bianchi incrociati. Manca tuttavia la data 1647 nello stemma in alto a destra il che rende tale esemplare un'altra variante rispetto a tutte quelle pubblicate da Takahatake. Buono stato di conservazione, qualche restauro e qualche integrazione. Esemplare controfondato in epoca moderna con carta giappone.
