In these five “note”, Schiaparelli reports his discoveries about the slow rotation of Venus, and for the first time makes the hypotesis on the blanket of clouds surrounding the planet, that is considered his discovery. The serie is materially taken from the volumes of the “Rendiconti del Reale istituto lombardo di scienze e lettere”, including the plate.

In-8°; cc. (12). The original edition of the poem by Pico della Mirandola, one of the first sources on the collection of ancient statues preserved in the Belvedere Vatican Garden. Written during the last year of pontificate by Julius II (1513), the work underlines the passion for classic antiquities that became, with this Pope, a fever in contemporary Rome. Many was wondering if it was suitable to put a heaten sculpture collection in Vatican. Pico, follower of Savonarola in blaming Renaissance culture of recovery and imitation of Roman empire, through this work means to criticize the moral and cultural corruption of Iulius II Rome, putting this collection as its physical manifestation, and in his verses he puts the Holy Mary to counterbalance the classic Venus. In his letter to Giraldi, Pico offers a bird’s eye view on statues put in Belvedere. These are between the first words spent about the putting in this place of a symbol of Classic rebirth: the Laocoon found in the Domus Aurea area and bought by the pope.
" In the spring of 1820, on the Aegean island of Melos, an unsuspecting farmer was digging for marble building blocks when he unearthed the statue that would come to be known as the Venus de Milo. From the moment of its discovery a battle for possession ensued and was won, eventually, by the French. Touted by her keepers in the Louvre as the great classical find of the era, the sculpture gained instant celebrity - but its origins had yet to be documented or verified. From the flurry of excitement surrounding her discovery, to the raging disputes over her authenticity, to the politics and personalities that have given rise to her mystique, Gregory Curtis has given us a riveting look at the embattled legacy of a beloved icon and a remarkable tribute to one of the world's great works of art" 272p. illus. bibliography. index.
