"Told at their gatherings by the Indians of the Skeena and Nass Rivers region for countless generations, the eight myths in this volume are translated for the first time by one of their chiefs... Simple in style, the myths deserve a close reading to reveal their full effect. The introductions, notes, and glossaries which have been added help explain the important symbols and hereditary titles of these Northern British Columbia people. Guard has painstakingly researched published sources and original PRO records to produce an absorbing, definitive story of military opportunism and indiscretion; of extreme endurance punctuated by sudden, sharp action; and of clandestine, courageous enterprise and ingenuity in the idyllic setting of the Greek islands. An intriguing account of one of the least publicised campaigns of the war, this work examines all aspects of the campaign, makes impartial assessments... and dispels some of the myths and misstatements associated with it." v, [3], 655 pages. Extensive glossary. Bibliography. Index. Illustrated endpapers. Text in English. "The Kojiki, the earliest source book in Japanese literature and history, was completed in 712 A.D. under the auspices of the imperial court. It is the oldest extant book in Japanese and, as its title (literally, 'Record of Ancient Things') suggests, an account of a still earlier era. It is the court's statement about the origins of the imperial clan and the leading families and the beginnings of Japan as a nation; and it is, at the same time, a compilation of myths, historical and pseudo-historical narratives and legends, songs, anecdotes, folk etymologies, and genealogies." - from dust jacket.
